Hiked this trail yesterday around noon. Make sure to bring lots of water (I drank 3.5L) since it can reach about 100 degrees by afternoon.

Although the 21 switchbacks before the chains can be quite challenging and tiresome, the view of the canyon on both sides of the last peak are spectacular. I wore hiking shoes and felt comfortable walking along the narrow path. However be mindful of other hikers since it can be difficult trying to pass others along the chain portion of the trail.

Completed the trail except for Parsons Landing two weeks ago.

Day 1: Two harbors to little harbor (5mi)
The first half of the hike is uphike and without shade, so start early and bring water and sunscreen since there's no place to refill water until Little harbor. The coastal views are beautiful, and we even got to see a fox along the way.

Day 2: Little harbor to black jack (8mi)
A majority of the hike is uphill and without shade. If you travel on the crest of the mountains you can see in both directions which is quite beautiful. We stopped at the airport restaurant for a quick snack before tackling the last uphill portion towards the campsite. Note that Black Jack has outdoor showers but there are also mosquitos, so it's best to bring some bug spray.

Day 3: Black jack to avalon (14ish mi)
We started hiking around 6am as the sun was rising and were lucky enough to see a quail and many other birds. there was still some settled fog which was refreshing to hike through especially while passing by the lake. some of the hike is on fire road, so beware of speeding cars around corners. We brought trekking poles which were useful especially in the last couple miles downhill. Overall the hike was beautiful, however the lack of shade and high temperatures made me wish we had done the trail in the fall.

Beautiful trail to do during a cloudy day. The trailhead is right next to the parking area, however with the limited amount of space, it's best to come early. The overall trail is easy to follow with no overgrown areas, however wear lots of sunscreen as there's no shade for most of the hike. There's not really many bugs right now but we did see a couple small snakes and many lizards.
