Tara V reviewed Thunder Mountain Loop Trail

Really beautiful throughout the entire hike. - varied terrain and good amounts of shade. I agree with previous folks, it’s windy and well marked. Tons of bear scat - didn’t see or hear any, but they are definitely around. I also saw and heard quite a few hunters first thing this morning.

Loved this one! Really well marked trails and a good mix of terrain and absolutely spectacular views. That being said, the trail up to round top is precarious! It’s hard to see where to go - it curves toward the front so as you’re going up, the lake is at your back. The trail down to 4th of July was hard to see - just as well, it’s a steep trek back up.

The trail is clear until about 7500 ft elevation and then it’s all snow and you’ll need GPS. Lots of buds starting to push through the ground. We made it out to Susie but will be back in a couple of weeks after the trail is a little easier to navigate and the flowers are blooming.

The scenery is amazing and the miles are long - start early and bring sunscreen!

This is one of my most favorite trails. I always go counterclockwise. Be mindful of the time of year you're going - because it crosses through Sugarbowl, you'll need an Uphill pass during ski season.

A little muddy in spots due to melting snow, and very little shade, and absolutely beautiful.

Start early and beat the heat, bring water and sunscreen - there isn’t any shade on this trail. It’s beautiful and worth every bit of effort. It seems like most people go counterclockwise, but I suggest the opposite. The “up” is more gradual and if you go clockwise, the sweet views will always be in front of you.

This is an awesome little hike, show up early and you'll beat the crowds, there are lots of little trails to go down to the water along the way.

Also went parallel with the plan to catch the actual trail on the way down, but couldn’t get to the Peak with the snow. Snowshoes helped but in certain areas, especially getting up to the Peak, yaktrax or some kind of spikes would be most helpful. The views from the Ridge were amazing none the less.

It’s a good glute workout, awesome views that can be cold and windy so bundle up. Lots of elk, really, really cool.
