Sydney Marsh reviewed Independence Mountain Trail at Pence Park

Nice short hike that gets a work out in with the elevation gain. Would be good for someone acclimating before tackling a 14er.

It’s a pretty hike with some really cool overlooks. The trail is super well maintained so, aside from the elevation gain, I’d put this as an easier hike. Not a ton of aspens out there but the ones that are were really pretty today! (10/4/18)

Loved this! I’d agree with the moderate description—trail is well marked though. There are quite a few large rocks and tree roots along the way so just take care, especially if it starts to rain. Views at the top are gorgeous though. Didn’t make it to the second lake due to weather but will for sure be back to finish!

Sydney Marsh reviewed South Park 600 to Square Top Lakes

Nice, fairly easy trail with some great views, and the lakes are worth it. Got there a little before 8am on a weekday and pretty much had the trail to myself for the most part, a little busier on the way out. Tried to go a bit further on up towards Square Top Mountain, but the trail gets pretty faint after it breaks off so didn’t try too far. Would recommend!

Easy and short for a 14er, would be a good intro peak for someone new. Good view at the top. Road up to the trailhead is rocky and rough, but plenty of 2WD vehicles made the trip.

Done on 6/15. This is a great trail! Excellent scenery and not too strenuous. The first 2/3 on the way in has several streams to cross, and there were several snow drifts the last 1/3 as you got closer to the lake, but packed down for the most part so extra equipment wasn’t needed. Would definitely recommend having a high clearance vehicle to access the trailhead as the road is quite bumpy. All in all, a great trip and would strongly recommend.

Done on 6/6. Trail starts across the road from the parking lot. There are a few areas with snow still that obstruct the trail but can generally find the way. The largest is right near the tree line—head left up the slope once you’re out of the trees and it’s easy to find from there. No need for snow shoes or anything at this point though. Would definitely recommend this hike!

Nice that it’s so close to Denver yet you can experience some good elevation—it’s a workout for sure. The trail gets quite rocky near the top and requires some scrambling but the views are fantastic!

Nice variation between easy portions with more challenging sections, especially once you cross the first stream. The trail had a layer of snow, but not enough to need traction devices. Great views once you get to the top of the ridge, would definitely recommend!

Hike done 1/20, pre-snow. The initial part of the trail is quite rocky until you get down to the bottom of the valley, but do-able if you watch your footing. I didn’t go all the way due to time constraints, but good views up by the reservoir and a good place to stop for a snack break. Definitely keeping this hike in mind for future trips!

Hiked on 10/23...trail is still very passable. There are a few spots near the tree line that are snow covered but no posthole-ing. The lake is pretty but it's the views on the way down that really make the trip.

Sydney Marsh reviewed Crater Lakes Trail via Moffat Tunnel East Portal Trailhead

The trail was a good workout but I wouldn't rate it as hard/difficult as the site does. Although the distances traveled seem to be longer than the trail markers say, it's a beautiful hike through the forest and gorgeous views of the lakes at the top. Not too much snow right now, just a little tight as you're getting to the lower lakes. Definitely make your way toward the upper lake and take in the view of the two lower ones from above! (Hike done 10/19/17)

Definitely a strenuous hike--the elevation gain is tough, but the scenery and views at the summit are unmatched.
