Anne Mason reviewed Grassy Ridge Bald via Appalachian Trail

Pros: I hike for a view, and for that reason, this trail became an instantaneous favorite. The views are spectacular. Also, the drive from I-40 is fun - nice roads through a cute town and some pretty views along the way. Cons: I prefer a harder climb, so if you're looking for work, this probably isn't your trail. That being said, a hike is what you make of it, and it is the AT, so you have the option to continue for as many miles as you choose. There are a few short fun climbs. Also, this trail is extremely popular, and tends to be busy. However, it seems that many people only go to the first peak, fewer to the second, and hardly anyone all the way to the third. Overall, definitely worth a visit. Best option is to come on a clear day during the week.

Trail is technical but not hard. Lots of footwork but not much elevation gain on the way up. It almost felt like we climbed more on the way back to the trailhead. On the return, we went down and back up the Camp Alice Trail just to add some work to the hike. Very pretty spot with a stream where the Camp Alice Trail meets the Commissary Trail. I'd like to return and do the 6 mile trail as this trail did not feel like much of an accomplishment.

Fantastic trail. We started at Jones Gap parking, looped up to Jones Gap Falls, then looped around to the Rim trail. Almost constant elevation change for much of the loop, but very enjoyable climb on natural terrain. Trail was very wet as it is spring and there are streams and waterfalls everywhere. The last mile or two descending back to the parking lot did seem to take forever as it is very gradual and much easier than the previous miles.

Love this trail. Not a difficult climb, but a fun one. No overlooks really, but totally worth it for the falls. Perfectly pretty trail in springtime.

I'd definitely like to return on a clear day. Hike was easy, low impact in spite of trail erosion.

Took the Roundtop Ridge trail from Reservoir Rd to just a short section on the AT, to the trail up to the Rich Mountain Fire Tower - about a 7 mile hike excluding the walk from town. The trail was fantastic, and the view from the tower was amazing. Everything at the top was covered in ice, even though the temp in Hot Springs that day was in upper 40s/low 50s. It was incredibly beautiful. Also secluded - we met no one on the trail. A very rewarding hike.

This trail has no views, but it's a good walk in the woods, with some uphill intervals that make for a decent workout.

Hiked this backwards the first time, coming up counter-clockwise, then taking the AT to the Pump Gap Loop back to Silvermine Rd, then up Lover's Leap clockwise. Lover's Leap is not long enough to qualify as hard at all. It is steep, but takes only 15-20 minutes to climb. Trail was very enjoyable though, with lovely overlooks of Hot Springs and the French Broad. Combined with other trails in the area, it made for a fulfilling day hike.

Super easy walk if you start at the parking lot. It only takes a few minutes. Views are spectacular. It would be great to start hiking from a few miles down the AT to make more of a hike of it.

Definitely enjoyed this hike, even on a chilly, foggy and sometimes rainy day. I do not think the trail qualifies as hard at all. The sign at the trailhead says it is intermediate. The views are lovely.

I did not enjoy the actual trail at all, as it is really a road rather than a trail. Very gravelly, very steep, and not a fun climb. That being said, the last bit of the climb is an actual trail, and the view from Huckleberry Knob is astounding. I looked for a trail to the other visible peak, but could not find one. I have since learned that it is called Big Rock, and it is only available by bushwhacking across the ridge from Huckleberry Knob. So, in spite of my dislike for the trail itself, I will be going back to reach that other peak.

In my opinion, Table Rock has the best 360 degree views I have found in NC. I love this place. The hike is steep but short.

Love this trail. Hiked it counter-clockwise for more uphill time. Views are amazing. Popular place so lots of people. There were also very many stink bugs buzzing around like black flies when I went in the fall. I haven't encountered that anywhere.

Great hike with phenomenal views. Strenuous ascent takes about 45 minutes to an hour, them very easy cross-country hiking across the top of the ridge. I have only gone about three miles across so I can't speak for the entire 14 mile hike.

This is an excellent trail for getting outside on days when mountains are not an option. Simple, well marked trail. Not hard at all. Full loop is almost exactly 5 miles. The Short Turn Trail offers a 2.6 mile option.
