Susan Courtney Maxon reviewed Broad River Trail

We were all set for a great day hike on a new (to us) trail. The gravel road to the trailhead wasn't THAT bad, lots of ruts and mostly single lane with few areas to pull off for oncoming cars but luckily we didn't meet any cars. There were people parked and camping in a few areas. We weren't sure we were at the right trailhead because when we tried to record our tracks we appeared to be on and off the trail. There was a pull off area where we parked and found a trail marker and a foot bridge so we started there (pretty much coincided with All Trails map). Anyway, the trail was blazed with green metal rectangular markers but was overgrown with grasses, weeds and thorny stems. We pressed on hoping it would get better. We only hiked about half a mile when we came to an extremely steep downhill that was just loose dirt and some pebbles. We decided it wasn't worth the risk of injury to continue on such an overgrown trail. There are too many better trails with views to try instead. I wouldn't recommend this trail until some maintenance is done.

Trail was well blazed, not heavily traveled, overgrown in places, no views in summer, no creeks or water sources. We followed the directions listed and ended up on Bushyhead Rd. The BMT actually is that road but we wanted to start where the trail leaves the gravel road on the left. There was no parking to be found. We backtracked down the road about a quarter of a mile or so and pulled off then walked back up. The trail was unremarkable. It basically climbed for two miles through laurel and light woods then descended. Nothing to see but we got a good workout.

It was a nice moderate hike...right at 7.1 miles. This is a mountain bike trail that advises hikers to go against the bike traffic which alternates direction by day of the week. We went on a Saturday in early March and saw maybe three groups of two bikers the entire time. We took the orange trail to the purple connector trail to the blue trail. There are shortcuts posted along the way if you don't really want to do all 7 miles. The blue trail meanders a lot and follows the very picturesque creek at times.
