Steve Ross reviewed Sky Camp Trail

Nice hike, especially if you add on a stop at Sculptured Beach as some other reviewers have recommended. A few suggestions if you go on this hike: the trail is overgrown in many places with a lot of poison oak in the area, so I would highly recommend wearing pants; the Fire Lane Trail is quite exposed, so it is worth doing that portion of the hike in a cooler part of the day if it is warm/sunny (as it was when we hiked it).

Steve Ross reviewed Muir Woods and Tourist Club Loop from Mountain Home Inn

A nice descent into Muir Woods, with some truly beautiful groves that you will have all to yourself (certainly in contrast to the trails along Redwood Creek in Muir Woods). The ascent is steep and not that interesting until the views return on the Sun/Redwood Trails. And if it is open to guests, the Tourist Club is a great spot for a beer and to relax.

Steve Ross reviewed The Incline Trail and the Barr Trail

This is a truly strenuous hike, but a great workout. Bring plenty of water and a hat/sunscreen, as The Incline is very exposed. While most people either go straight back down once they reach the top or cut over from the top to the Barr Trail, it is worth continuing straight at the top and adding in a relatively flat 1.1 miles that affords beautiful views of Pike's Peak and other nearby peaks. This additional 1.1 miles is also very lightly trafficked: on the Monday that I did The Incline there were dozens of people on that trail, but I saw no one else until I got back to the junction on Barr Trail that leads back up to the top of The Incline.

Steve Ross reviewed First and Second Flatiron Hike

Short, but steep (and sweet). It's worth going all the way to the end of the trail, almost to the top of the first flatiron, for views over Boulder and third flatiron as well as of mountains deeper in the range.

Steve Ross reviewed Vernal and Nevada Falls via the Mist Trail

Definitely worth a visit in the spring, when both Vernal and Nevada Falls are gushing. The hike is fairly steep, but paved for most of the way to the bottom of Vernal Falls. The Mist Trail is beautiful, though you definitely get soaked as you climb up along Vernal Falls; bring a poncho or raincoat and a raincover for your bag. The top of Nevada Falls is a great spot for a snack, with good views down the falls as well as of Liberty Cap. Start early (before 9am), otherwise the trail will be extremely crowded as you hike up (lots of school groups, families, etc.).

    Steve Ross reviewed Yosemite Point

A truly strenuous hike, but well worth it for the stunning views across Yosemite Valley, of Half Dome, and of Lower and Upper Yosemite Falls. My favorite spot on the trail is the overlook of the full falls, which comes via an unmarked trail just before the first view of the Upper Falls and marked on the map at 5,030'. The switchbacks towards the top of the trail are fairly exposed, so bring a hat/sunscreen or start early. Definitely not to be missed in the spring, when the falls are gushing.

Really good hike and the uphill on the return is definitely a good workout. Beautiful redwood groves and a serene creek, a variety of wildflowers, and a few pretty good views of the coast below.

Steve Ross reviewed Coastal, Cataract, and Old Mine Loop

While not as varied as the Matt Davis-Dipsea-Steep Ravine Loop, this is an excellent hike, with superlative views on a clear day (especially towards the end of the trail). The poppies were popping and Cataract Falls was more beautiful than I expected.

Steve Ross reviewed Abrigo Valley Trail to Mott Peak Trail Loop

Great 2-2.5 hour afternoon hike, especially after all the rain: very green, beautiful wildflowers, great views, plenty of cows, and not too muddy. The lagoons are especially picturesque.

Steve Ross reviewed Young Lakes Trail Loop

I did this loop in the opposite direction (starting at Young Lakes via Dog Lake and finishing via Glen Aulin). With a pack, the initial ascent is steep and tough, but it's worth it for the views at Young Lakes. The lowest of the lakes makes for stunning sunrises/sunsets and there's good campsites on the north side of the lake (and good water in the creek that flows down from the lake). Also well worth a hike to the highest lake, which is very pretty (the middle lake is comparatively unremarkable).

Steve Ross reviewed Tuolumne River Trail

Great spot to escape the crowds in Tuolumne Meadows. I had a couple of hours to kill before meeting up with the rest of my group and had driven by this trail a few times. On the Saturday morning of a holiday weekend (Labor Day), I was the only one on the trail between 9am and 10:30am. The trail skirts the meadows and then joins the river for a nice cascade and I was fortunate that, on my return, I spotted a bear and her cubs on the opposite of the river, just after they had caught a fish (or deer?). It was just me and them for half an hour. If you're looking for a short, peaceful stroll in Tuolumne, this is the one.

Steve Ross reviewed Gaylor Lakes Trail

Short but sweet hike; I did this on the day I arrived in Yosemite from the Bay Area and this was the perfect hike to acclimatize. Great views of Dana Meadows on the hike up and down and both the upper and lower Gaylor Lakes are beautiful.

Steve Ross reviewed Valencia Peak Trail

A short, but sweet hike. If you start in the morning, you will almost certainly begin in the fog. The ascent begins easily enough, though it is fairly steep to a false summit and then to Victoria Peak itself. About halfway through the hike we had risen through the fog and had great views of the hills further inland as well as those both up and down the coast (though the coast was still fogged in). If you go later in the day, you may catch a better view, though it will be hot.

Steve Ross reviewed Celeste Lake via Iceline Trail

One of the best hikes I've ever done. The trail to Celeste Lake is closed, so you cannot currently complete this loop, but it is well worth the hike up to the Iceline Summit. Steep switchbacks through forest before you emerge on to a rocky plateau. A bit more climbing and traversing several large snow fields at the foot of a few glaciers before reaching the summit for some incredible 360 degree views. Would recommend poles as the snow is soft in several places and ready to cave in.

Steve Ross reviewed Sentinel Pass Trail

A fantastic hike. Steep switchbacks to begin, but then a steady climb to the valley below the pass, with a few alpine lakes. The climb up to the pass through a few snowfields and some scree was not for those afraid of heights, but the view from the pass was incredible.

Steve Ross reviewed Plain of the Six Glaciers Trail

Stunning views of Lake Louise as well as the surrounding mountains; while the Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse is a worthy stop, the viewpoint a bit beyond is stunning and a great lunch spot. Also good for watching and listening to the glaciers above calving.

Steve Ross reviewed Wasootch Ridge Trail

Did not make it all the way up because of a lack of time, but what a stunning ridge hike. After a steep ascent at the beginning, there are views almost the entire way up. Well worth it to hike up and back for a few miles.

Steve Ross reviewed Marin Headlands Loop, including Slacker Hill

This loop has a slow, meandering (and downhill) start, but it is worth it for the crescendo of views towards the end of the trail, with an expansive view from the East Bay to Alcatraz, San Francisco, and the Golden Gate Bridge. Lunch atop Slacker Hill is a must.

Nice redwood groves and some good views, but this does not compete with other close by trails/parks.
