Stephanie Freas reviewed Crater Lake and Maroon Creek to East Fork

I love how you can see so much on this trail: aspen forests, rock slides, three lakes (2 from a distance), and lots of wildlife. But, I think it’s the same beauty from Maroon Lake.

A great trail for easy hiking and sightseeing. I love the squirrel trail, especially where the creek ends into a very creepy cave! I’ve seen three snakes on the trails, and I enjoy the varying environments.

I’ve been looking forward to the hike for a year and waiting to improve my skills to do it. Even after many other hard local hikes, this tops the cake. Reasons for frustration: the trail is terribly marked. I was off trail a few times. The steepness. Most of the time, I don’t mind going up forever if I can easily come back down, but for Mt. Garfield, it was probably harder coming down. Not only is it steep, but the dirt and rock is so loose that you slide and fall a lot. With that, have good shoes, get there EARLY, bring more water than you think you need, and bring a friend. Beautiful, gorgeous views. I’m proud I’ve done it, but never again!

Easy trail with a beautiful creek to guide you for miles. I’ve been in spring and winter and both times are beautiful.

Hard to find the trailhead, but worth it when you do. Park at the final parking area before the road turns into a ranch private road. Then when you see the fire ring, turn left and walk through the grass until you see a small trailhead. It is near the Rifle Water sign. You’ll cross a covered log over the creek and the trail is easy from there. One of my favorite hikes. It has great variation, isn’t too challenging, and it has AMAZING views. In the summer, the wildflowers are amazing. You feel like you’re on top of the world.

Extremely difficult trail, especially in the winter. The memorials are a powerful reminder of how challenging it can be out there. Worth a hike to better understand the hard work of our firefighters.

Love this trail. Never busy and great views. The trail is kind of hard to get to, but once you get through Rifle Mountain Park, just keep going until you see the sign for it.

Best in the spring. Not much hiking, but there are some trails within a short drive.

Beautiful ending, but there are more trails near that are just as beautiful with less traffic and crawling over rocks
