Steph Anderson reviewed Columbine Lake Trail

I went last week. Weather was perfect. If you don’t have 4WD, turnoff the highway and go down the hill. Park after the bridge and hike up to the trail (~1 mike).

Trail is steep for the first 2 - 2.5 miles once you get to the trail head. First 2 miles are a series of switch backs and then you climb uphill after that. Once you reach the top of the hill, you descend a bit and it flattens off until you reach the lake where there is a slight uphill.

The lake is gorgeous! It’s much bigger and less populated than Ice Lake.

Careful going down. The trail is steep and covered in loose rock. I had hiking poles and went slow but still managed to totally wipe out a couple of times.

The hike was great but the scenery leading up to the lake was okay (Ice Lake was better). The lake is surrounded by mountains so you also don’t get a view of the mountains like Ice Lake.

10 miles if you park after the bridge and 8 if you start at the trail head.

Great trail. Not hard until you start up to the upper lake. I would note that there are two trails up to the upper lake. If you go between the lakes and up, it’s pretty steep and you will end up climbing a lot of boulders. You will not follow the trail on all trails. You’ll end up to the left of the trail but will still reach the lake. You have to go around the lower big lake a bit to reach the actual trail (the one you find on all trails). It’s steep (maybe not as bad as the other way). Both trails have been travels a bunch so marked.

Trail was pretty but not sure I would do it again. Long dirt rocky road to get to the trail. Don’t not necessarily need a high clearance vehicle or 4wd. HUGE parking lot so you don’t have to worry about getting a spot. Probably holds 50 cars.

One of my favorite trails for trail running. Not super difficult but a nice workout. Pretty views!

Hit directions on All Trails and follow the map. You will have no problem finding the trail (even on the long dirt / rock road to the trail head). Trail is easy to follow but know the number as well as the name. In general stay to your right for Devil’s Causeway.

Hike itself isn’t too bad until you hit mile 2 or 2.5. At this point you start ascending and quickly. I found the ascent before the switchbacks and up to the top the hardest. The switchbacks themselves are long and gradual so not that bad.

Causeway is scary but doable. I don’t do well with heights and I turned back from Angel’s Landing. Just don’t look down and get down on all fours. I scrambled across and focused on finding steady and secure footholds. Go early to avoid the crowd.

Do the full loop! The scenery is amazing and unlike anything you will see in Colorado. There are a ton of lakes. The hike after the Causeway is basically all downhill. It’s long but not hard at all. There are a couple of uphills but nothing like the first part of the trail. Watch out for the sheep dogs!

Beautiful hike! This trail has a little bit of everything (streams, animals, lakes, mountains) and the fall colors are amazing right now. I can only imagine what it looked like with all the wildflowers.

I accidentally went clockwise (left at the dorm) and I enjoyed the trail. The first half up to the lake was gradual and I walked around for a bit before proceeding up the switchbacks. The hike up wasn’t that bad because my legs were warmed up. The view of the lake from up top was amazing. The rest of the hike was downhill. Overall the hike wasn’t hard. It’s a long hike so I think that makes the elevation gain easier. I started at 6 and the trailhead was packed when I came down.

Amazing hike! Very hard. I was sore for days after this hike. It’s a very steep uphill especially the final mile up to Ice Lake. The Lake is amazing. Unlike anything I have ever seen before. Definitely go the extra half mile to Island in the Sky (or whatever it is called). I think you have to venture up the ridge a bit to see the true beauty of that lake which I did not have the energy to do.

I would note that the trail splits at one point to go to Ice Lake (left) and Island in the Sky (right). I would go left. The trail is flat for a bit but then there is a decent uphill to the lake. I came down the other way and my legs were so tired. The path is steeper and more loose rock. I slipped a couple of times so it’s definitely a little harder.

The trail is easy to follow. Someone said it wasn’t clear in a review. Follow the All Trails map and you should be fine.

Amazing trail! I loved the views. I would definitely go early in the morning to avoid the crowds. I started my hike at 6. Definitely venture up to the upper lakes. You’ll get an amazing view of Blue Lake and the upper two lakes are pretty in their own way. The hike up to the upper lakes is hard but totally worth it.

I was here two weeks ago and would note that I ran into a small cub while driving up to the trailhead. Instead of moving on the cub kind of chilled in the middle of the road. Where there is a baby cub there is a momma bear so be on the lookout!

Pretty trail. Not terrible difficult. Steady incline to the top. You can start at the Black Lake or Glacier George Trailhead.

Sky Pond is way better and I would definitely recommend it over this hike.

Amazing trail! Pretty much all up hill until you hit Loch Lake where it levels off and then you start another steep ascent up to Glass Lake and Sky Pond. Climbing up the first part of the waterfall is pretty scary so make sure to take your time. It’s so much easier on the way down. You can basically scoot on your butt coming down. Glass Lake is amazing but follow the trail to the right to get to Sky Pond. Incredibly windy and a bit chilly at the upper lakes so bring layers.

All in a beautiful trail that I highly recommend!
