Trailhead is pretty easy to find if you use the map and park in the parking lot. There is a map trail there after you go down the gravel road a bit. You’ll see a school in front of you (which is also a great reference point when you’re up the mountain to see how far you’ve come) - the trail is to the right once you are getting closer to the school. There is a “more difficult” and “less difficult” option. We split up and I took the more. It was incredibly hot and I wish I had taken the less. There is no shade on this trail - so be prepared. We hike a lot, but not usually in this elevation, so we were sucking air for sure. Kids managed fine - no scary spots. They were pretty far ahead of us and we had no worries. Saw about 6 other hikers.

If you can only do one trail from the south rim, do this one. About 45 minutes down and just under an hour out. Good for kids who can follow directions and are well behaved enough to pay attention - there are places they could fall, but not an issue typically.

Beautiful hike. Has amazing eucalyptus trees at the head on someone’s personal property that should be seen! Fantastic beach reward at the end.

Fantastic trail. Rained yesterday, so the trail was pretty muddy. We arrive about 9:15am and finished about 12:15. Took it pretty slow because of the slip factor. Saw several hikers that had lots of mud on their rears. You don’t want to be on this trail in the rain - too risky for a slip injury. We love it. Glad we did it. The scramble to the summit is a lot of fun.
