Staci Janssen reviewed Appalachain Trail to Jump Off Trail

This was an interesting hike. First I would like to add this hike is described as moderate. I post my reviews more towards those who are not the experienced hiker..so this probably should have been marked as difficult. But we thoroughly enjoyed this hike, there were some tough spots here and there as far as the incline, but once you reach Jump Off it's entirely worth it! The views were phenomenal, but please be careful the drop is literally a disorienting long vertical drop! Very intense ,loved it! It actually ended up being just under 7 miles. I was not anticipating it being a tourist spot, but after I realized when we parked in the Newfound Gap popular parking area..it was inevitable of how many tourists would be on the trail. I enjoy very little traffic when I am hiking but this hike had an amazing view which in the end was worth it. There were a lot of bear skat-so be cautious . If you come across a strong pungent odor, which is much a long the trail, that's bear skat for the most part. We saw a few droppings. All around enjoyed the outcome!!! Phenomenal views!!

This was beautiful in the fall. I wouldn't go on this trail again just because the trail itself was not interesting ,it's just a wide straight trail with no real interest points, but the surroundings were very beautiful. This trail is listed as easy on all trails app,and it is indeed a very easy trail. The creek is along side the trail the entire time..we were only able to hike 7 miles as we took a lot of breaks at the creek and ran out of daylight. Mouse Creek Falls is exactly how it describes..small. So if you go only to see the falls..you might be disappointed if you are expecting a larger fall. All around,I would highly recommend this trail during fall,as the trees and colors are beautiful. The creek is a huge plus ,many access points to the creek.

This was a great hike. It was more of an incline than we anticipated, but loved it. We went yesterday which was pretty much at its peak in fall and was simply beautiful. There was something very ominous that occurred after the first 2 miles..my wife and I both experienced a fast pulse in our heads that was the exact same beat 3 separate times in the same location in the back of our heads. I know this sounds strange, but it happened to both of us during 15 min of a section of the hike. So if this happens to you,it will pass! Interesting to say the least though . There were many signs of the early settlers which was great to experience throughout the hike. We did not see the burial sites though. Many river crossings that we had to ford through made the hike more interesting. We brought wet shoes since it's much easier to cross without slipping. I'm sure the water would of been much higher a few months back, but It was up to our knees this time around. The hike on all trails says its 7.5 miles but it's actually a little over 8 miles. We took extra breaks to enjoy the fall colors and of course the incline didn't help. Ha. I highly recommend this hike!

This trail is an easy ,beautiful trail, especially in the fall. But what is not mentioned on all trails app is that there is a gate (Purchase Rd) that is closed often and you need to walk about 1.5 miles at a slow incline to actually get to the Ferguson Cabin trail. It is a beautiful walk in the fall, but is a bit of an incline ,especially if you are going based on what the app says (easy). It also connects to the Cataloochee Divide Trail. There are some apple trees on the trail as well,so you can grab one if your tall enough and snack on the way :). But keep an eye out for bears..there were many signs of bears in the area. There is a research center as well you can check out while your there. We ended up hiking almost almost 5 miles including visiting the Research Center. All around ,nice trail. Beautiful views.

This is a real easy trail. If your a beginner or just want an easy day on the trails this is it. We've hiked this trail once before in the winter, and enjoyed it. It has had maintenance on the bridges which is nice. Some are still just logs to get across, although I enjoy the logs. But we couldn't take our dog on the trail before the maintenance because of the gaps in the log bridges. Not much to see on the trail ,it is also a mountain bike trail so look out for them as well. All around, just an easy trail for one of those days where you don't feel like pushing too hard.

This was a nice hike. It was a bit mundane the first mile or so but afterwards the trail became a bit more interesting. Not many views while on the trail, but I imagine in a couple weeks or so when the leaves begin to change it will be beautiful. Especially in winter, I would love to see the waterfall in winter. It was trickling down,it hasn't rained in a while, but was still worth seeing. Trail was moderate, sometimes it had some inclines..but not too bad. We did take the trail clockwise ,but I don't think it matters if your just hiking. If your on a bike then it might make a difference, It's also a mountain bike trail. We went on a weekend and very light traffic. We saw 3 people hiking. This trail is marked really well, made it easy to follow. It has some swimming holes and the creek is pretty much right a long the hike on and off. There were many open spots to pitch a tent and camp out. I would do this hike again maybe in a few weeks.

This was a great hike! It was more of an incline than we thought it would be..its marked as moderate on this app,but it's actually marked as very difficult on the trail. A lot of roots and rocks ,but the trail is an interesting trail. Taking the bypass to John Rock is highly recommended if your up for a little more distance and incline, but the views are pretty amazing. It took us about 3 hrs-6 miles ,but we also hung out at Johns Rock for a little while. There were many people who were camping here and there,so if your up for pitching a tent, there are many flat areas. All around,we really enjoyed this hike ! Also, the store at the education center where you park has a map of the trail. I would stop in there and grab one before you go. It's open till 4:30pm.

This is not much of a trail at all. It's more like a very steep driveway. We decided to go just because we pass it so many times on the BRP, we figured we would see what all the hype was about. This would be good for tourist, but that's about it in my opinion. You can see much better views from the Cowee Overloook on the BRP and you wouldn't have to walk up a steep incline and end up in the middle of a group of people on a small enclosed overlook. But,it did have nice views for those who do not get to see them very often.

This is a beautiful trail. There are plenty of wide open views and the hike is a very enjoyable hike. It's best to go during the mid day, sometimes the fog is heavy and the views become obsolete. We really enjoyed this hike. Black Balsam Knob is one of our favorite places to go to,it has many trails to explore.

This was a great hike. It was a nice workout, and gorgeous views. Granted, some days have a fair amount of traffic. (Weekdays are best for this hike) I wouldn't advise anyone who hike this trail, if they don't hike often,it can be a bit of a challenge at times, especially towards the top. We brought our dog the first time and didn't even trek but a mile..too many other dogs (that were not on leashes ) as well as switchbacks and just the roots and rocks on the trail made it too difficult (as he was on a leash as every dog should be) which made this hike even more difficult. We later came back and completed the hike ,without the dog- watched the sunset and it was beautiful and well worth it! We ended up trekking back down in the dark, but we were well prepared. You can pitch a tent as well just outside of the trail ,then hike up to the summit in the AM and watch the sunrise. It's a bit of a tourist attraction, but all around, beautiful views. We actually went 2 years ago ,I wanted to post my review:).
