Relaxing loop with some nice uphill and an excellent view from the top of the fire tower! It’s been recently painted and it’s sturdy enough to climb carefully! Saw lots of turtles and frogs on this hike as well. Be careful where you step!

Crowded but beautiful. Lovely views of the river valley even on a cloudy day. Bring hiking boots for better footing on the steep uphill.

Not much of a hike. The old woods road has not been cared for in a long time. It’s overgrown and the trail markers/blazes have fallen off or been destroyed. Lots of downed trees and debris in the trail. The highlights are a nice view of the Hudson River toward Bear Mt Bridge, a small waterfall ACROSS the river, and the Garrison Institute garden. The garden is quaint but in full bloom with peonies, lavender, roses, and rhododendrons. The ruined buildings are interesting but not extensive. There is bamboo along the trail which is lovely but doesn’t make up for the poor trail condition. It’s conveniently located next to the Metro North Garrison stop, but it’s not worth a trip from NYC by itself. Maybe worth including if you do other trails in the Hudson Highlands.

Lovely trail with some solid views. It will be crowded on weekends, so go early. It’s all gravel carriage roads with the exception of the portion from Milbrook Mountain back to Lake Minnewaska. This section is a rocky footpath that descends to the Coxing Kill river (be careful this section is WET and slippery) and then increases in elevation to reach the lake.

Go early on summer weekends (9 am) to avoid crowds. It’s moderately difficult if you don’t mind some elevation and scramble. The loop I describe below clocks in at about 8 miles.

Follow the red trail (Lake Minnewaska Carriage) from the parking lot until you reach the yellow trail (Milbrook Mountain Carriage). Take yellow trail past Patterson’s Pellet, where the views will start to get scenic! About 1.5 miles past the pellet. Gertrude’s Nose trail (red blazes) begins on the right side of the yellow trail. The first rocky scramble begins when you cross a set of power lines. After that point the western views of the Gunks are SPECTACULAR. The trail turns at the nose and begins to head northeast to a lovely viewpoint of Milbrook Mountain. At this viewpoint, Gertrude’s Nose trail ends and you will reach a juncture where the yellow trail (Milbrook Mountain Carriage road) meets the red trail (Milbrook Mountain footpath). If you want to make a loop without backtracking, take the red trail (the sign says “to Lake Minnewaska”). The red trail dips down the mountain and crosses Coxing Kill river. Be careful as you descend, this area is wet and a bit slippery! After you cross the river, the trail increases in elevation until you reach the banks of Lake Minnewaska. Dip your toes in the lake, and then take the red trail (Lake Minnewaska Carriage Road) back to the parking lot. This hike takes about 4 hours at a relaxed pace, with time for resting at Gertrude’s Nose. Bring 2 liters of water, you’ll need it!
