Siri Zwemke reviewed Doyles River Loop via Appalachian Trail

This was a great hike if we had't gotten lost; not that it wasn't well marked, but be sure to read all reviews and everyone's notes before doing these hikes. We started at the wrong point - at the Overlook - and hooked up with the trail without a problem, but at about the 8 mile mark (yes we'd already gone off the trail at one point) we mistakenly took the fire trail and ended up 2 miles out of our way. However, if you stay on the trail, this is an excellent one as it is nice and clear, the falls are some of the prettiest in that you get SO close, and it was just overall a very pleasant hike. It is definitely a long downhill followed by a long uphill but they are gradual enough to not burn too badly. You do have to cross the river a few times and it was wet; I would allow about 6 hours for the hike.

Very nice hike. A steady but not difficult climb, gorgeous views. Lots of bugs for some reason, be sure to bring bug spray. Absolutely camera worthy. More people than I expected but it is mid summer. A good hike if you're recovering from some more strenuous ones and need a breather. Starts at the picnic area, not the overlook. Trail was clearly marked. Saw a deer, lots of swallows at the rock, and bear scat but no bears.

I gave this a five because while it doesn't have amazing views (until the top of Bear Church Rock, which is SO peaceful), the trail was well trodden, clear, and a heck of a workout. The first two miles are pleasant, the next two miles are a steady rise by the end of which you're going to be 'feeling the burn', I guarantee it. Be sure to stop on the way back and soak your feet in the wonderful cold and clear water. I would rate this as hard, not moderate, and our measurements (fitbit and phone tracking app) were closer to 9.4 miles up and back. I gave it a '5' because it was a heck of a workout, on a steady tough climb without loose rocks/scrambling; very empty when we went, and just nice and peaceful.

A great hike, but a rating of hard is, well, hard. Yes, I'm approaching 60, but in very good shape, and this was an exhausting and strenuous hike. Lots of rocks, a real work out on the ankles and knees. Pay close attention and bring a walking stick or two, as well as lots of water and something to eat. Our fitbits measured it at more like 9.5 miles. Be sure to stop and put your feet in the water at some point. Watch for snakes (big) and bears (sudden). In other words pay attention to your surroundings. Lots of swimming holes (ice cold clean water) and fairly well traveled. Trails are well marked but print the above or bring a print out so you know which path to take. Allow 5-7 hours. Parking lot was packed so get there early to get a spot, otherwise there's overflow parking at $10 a shot.

We walked from the 605 end four miles up and four miles back. It's a beautifully maintained flat trail where for the most part two people can walk side by side. There is a LOT of poison ivy, however, so wear long pants. We also went after weeks of heavy rains and there was a lot of standing water on the sides of the trail, so bug spray also recommended. A great trail if you're working up to harder ones, or you want to speed walk, or even want to stroll and chat. And despite being flat, we felt like we got quite a good workout after the 8 miles. Next time we'll enter from the 610 side venture in the other direction. (Friday in June - very quiet with no other hikers seen).

Got a little lost at one point and there was one place of some fairly serious rock scrambling, but the view was amazing and a picnic at the top just fantastic.

Great hike. We did get lost at one point extending the hike by a mile or too; saw a bear (who wasn't very afraid) and at one point had trouble passing a very large hornet's nest handing mid trail. Made it all the more exciting however!

A good one to go on during the colder months, though we didn't see much in the way of wildlife. Fairly easy.

Super enjoyable, very quiet and private, Potomac overlook is lovely and very private, perfect place for a picnic and to watch for eagles (which we did see)

An easy loop, a bit more people even during the weekdays. Be sure to go when the bluebelles are out, otherwise I think it might be boring.
