This trail requires your attention especially if it's your first time hiking it. Everyone I ran into told me they got lost at least once, and that goes for me as well. Once you are in the forest and the traffic noise gets left behind, things are straightforward. Until that happens though I would encourage you to pay close attention to the markers as there is tons of rock climbing in this area and the very first part of this trail actually leads to a granite mass for that purpose. The chain wall you climb. The ropes you don't. Also, don't get discouraged by the logging road. You gonna spend a good while on it. Don't worry about the forking just pay attention to the orange markings/paint on the trees and stay on the road until you see an arrow on the ground made of stones and sticks, pointing you back into the forest. (You will veer left after a little while on the logging road, then continue up and over many streams/creeks/washouts then you will get to a point where you can go straight or turn right, you want to go right and continue the steady climb up for a good while longer and when you feel like you might have gotten lost just continue straight don't make any other turns and you will eventually get to the arrow on the ground.) Once back in the forest the trail is clearly marked. The lake was frozen and the surrounding area was covered in snow on May 7, 2017. This trail offers a very good workout. Not too difficult. I would recommend plenty of water, lunch and most importantly proper gear. Enjoy!! :)

Hiked it on April 21. Tons of snow. Hard packed. Trail well marked. Was able to run almost all of it. Snowshoes are absolutely not necessary, however, as I said plenty of snow up there still for snowshoeing if that's what you enjoy. I would recommend solid hiking boots though and gators to keep your feet dry when you sink in knee deep when you accidentally step off the trail. Stay away from the lake and creeks, tree wells, obviously. In my opinion, a much much easier hike in winter conditions. Enjoy!

Excellent workout! Love this hike, have done it many times. Some parts are difficult/challenging. Amazing views from all three peaks. Proper gear a must!!
