Read: Trailhead has a 5 mile steep dirt road leading up to it, don't think you can just drive up there with your economy rental vehicle! We went during monsoon season, so we parked our dinky car at the parking lot at the bottom of the canyon to avoid unexpectedly getting stuck up at the campgrounds. It took us 2 hours to reach the trailhead with pictures. Beautiful views all throughout the hike! halfway to the trailhead is a lookout spot for a waterfall. Trail meets the moderate profile, other than the lack of oxygen, there was nothing too difficult. Be prepared to hike 16 miles if you don't have a truck/4x4 during monsoon season. Ran across about a dozen hikers on a Saturday so great if you're paranoid about an unexpected emergency. Sighted only one rattlesnake but didn't cause any problems. Theres an outhouse at the trailhead with no water point, be sure to bring enough food and water for the entire trip.

Definitely an easy difficulty. Take the free trail map in the welcome center if you want. I ran it at 10 am and I was the only soul around. It was 87 degrees so not too hot, I had a hat, sunglasses, and plenty of water and I was fine. View at the top is pretty decent, its just slightly more steep to get there. I definitely had my eyes peeled for snakes the whole time. Most of the trail was Rocky.

Tried trail running it. Even though it was sunny, i was feeling an unusual cold breeze for hawaii the whole time. Ran down to the bottom of the crater ~4mi (the first junction) i decided to turn around since the i felt like i was already pretty much inside the crater. I was not ready for a high elevation climb like this! My heart rate monitor said i was fine, but i was breathing twice as hard regardless. Please respect the altitude and make conservative estimates regarding your abilities.

Great for trail running! Its hard to jog past the pavilion unless you're really in shape. Felt like a shorter Wiliwilinui but with the same elevation gain.

Just want to reiterate that the trail off to the side before the bench is not part of kolekole. It leads to a large hill, but it turns an otherwise kid friendly, easy hike into a highly eroded, all fours slope climb to the top. It is getting even more eroded every weekend because of the recent high traffic. I do not recommend novice hikers who don't know about basic climbing principles to try this. It's only a matter of time before someone with inexperience and overconfidence gets hurt on this one.

Pauoa flats trail by itself starts as an offshoot of pu'u'ohi'a trail, leading down and intersecting with multiple different trails (just follow the signs for Pauoa) and ending at a lookout of the pali area(it is clearly signed END OF TRAIL). Pauoa flats is a one heck of a technical trail to run! There is a web of roots along a long stretch to slow you down. after that, you enter the bamboo forest area which has been consistently full of puddles of mud in my experience. The end of this trail has another trail head to the beginning of the climb to k2-k1.

    Shawn J reviewed Kalawahine Trail

Did some trail running, the Kalawahine trail by itself is only 1.3 miles long. What is being shown on the map is a combination of Kalawahine, half of Pauoa flats, and the climb to the top of K2. Be aware that i counted 4 downed trees on this trail yesterday, with 2 at a dangerous angle/could continue to slide down. Whenever the downed trees are taken care of, the trail should be considered easy with a caveat that it is frequently muddy and slippery most days.

The whole trail is easily 14+ miles! I made it to mile 6.5 before having to turn back due to time constraints. I was extremely lucky to run on a dry day. the first 5 miles are full of technical single track trail with uneven, rocky, and muddy terrain, but are still runable as long as you have hiking poles for stability. There are multiple spots where you could lose balance easily and fall a great distance down. After mile 5, however, the trail is so overgrown, wet, and slippery(spots of smooth, wet rock are common) that I was forced to walk slowly. I am certain I was within 1 mile of the summit, but I had already reached my 3hour climb limit and had to turn around. I was chasing daylight towards the end. 5 and a half hours with breaks for food and pictures.

Nice trail for running, it is very well maintained for about 2 miles. The last mile before the turnaround point is hard to run quickly (downed branches, mud) especially when it is wet. About a half mile before the top you can break off to a different trail that eventually leads to the back end of the stairway to heaven(do not try unless heavily experienced). A beautiful little valley.

did the upper first, if you want to do the same, just make sure not to go inside the 3rd tunnel as the junction to the lower trail is off to the left of the 3rd tunnel entrance. i personally liked that I didn't have to do a steep muddy ascent by doing upper first (it's a steep descent into the valley, then a gradual ascent this way). I might come back to the upper trail on a dry day for trail running.

The full trail is 10-11 miles if you want to see the summit. Hike is easy for the first 3 miles, then you will hit the rope climbs and sketchy muddy paths. I was glad to have been using hiking poles for balance. I haven't made it to the summit but plan to when I have at least 7 hours free. I made it to the 4th mile before I hit my time limit and had to turn back. 8 miles in 4 hours.

Shawn J reviewed Ka'ena Point Via Farrington Hwy

Writing this review from a trail runner's perspective rather than a hiker. I had a great time running the north side Kaena point, it has lots of things to challenge you: Rolling hills, uneven rocky terrain, loose sand, hot scorching sun. I highly recommend running an hour before sunrise to beat the sun, otherwise you need to have sunscreen, shades, and a hat/visor to protect yourself. North side is definitely underrated.

Ran this yesterday, it seems they have made major improvements to the trail since the last time I've done it. There used to be muddy indented steps that were slippery in the rain, but now everything is rocky or man made steps. You would have to have terrible balance to slip even in the rain now. The improvements have made this hike easier than diamond head, so I recommend Manoa falls as your entry level, first hike. Bring non-flat shoes and clothes you can get muddy in and you'll be fine.

Listen, there's a guy up top frequently who tries to sell hiking certificates at a suggested "donation" rate of $10-15. He does not work for the park and is not an official vendor. You can get your official certificate at the entrance, in the gift shop for much cheaper ($2.50).

Fun trail to get a nice view of a wasteland-like crater. Be aware of the 4000 ft elevation, it may mess with your cardio. Lots of designated scenic photo stations clearly labeled for tourists. Do yourself a favor and cross the street when you get back to take a look at some neat lava tube tunnels.

Shawn J reviewed Papakolea Green Sand Beach

We actually started at the southernmost point by mistake, however on the way we found some beautiful light green sand in some areas. This area is pretty sunny and dry so come prepared. The beach itself is a pretty neat nook of the big island but i was disappointed by the dark green sand (almost looks like mud). Although it gets rocky at some parts it is fairly easy with no climbing required. Definitely do this hike if able and visiting.

Shawn J reviewed Pu'u Konahuanui Peak Trail

Underestimated the trail. My route started on kalawahine trail to Puuloa flats to the lookout to about 2200 feet up right before the last major climb to K2. Both Kalawahine and Puuloa Flats were trail runnable which is exactly what i did all the way to the lookout. The difficulty spikes to advanced at this point. I was hugging the hills on all of my climb due to the wind, rain, and steep angle of ascent. I regretted running half the trail as i was feeling it about 2200 ft, looking directly at the final climb before K2. took a little under 3 hours with a break at my highest point. will save my energy next time and go slower to get to the top.
