    Whale watching hotspot!
Because this cape sticks out from the shoreline 2.5 miles the whales must navigate around the point. You are perched 400’ above them and only 60-70 feet out so the view is stellar. See photos!

Shawn Earle reviewed Ecola State Park to Indian Beach Trail [CLOSED]

Trail closures force OCT hikers onto the access road from Ecola point TH to Indian Beach day use area. . There is water in the creek on trail to hiker/biker camp 1/10!mile north of Indian Beach.. There are several Adirondack style shelters and a vault toilet at the hiker/biker camp, NO WATER. There were some rodents visible when I shone my light into the shelters at night when I arrived so I opted for a tent site nearby. Nice secluded h/b camp

Shawn Earle reviewed Oregon Coast Trail: Arch Cape to Manzanita

One of the most beautiful sections of the OCT. Consider a stealth camp near Devils Cauldron. That’s what I did on my recent NB hike. Nobody bothered me in the elk meadows and Short Sands is only about 2 miles away with water and restrooms/trash. I easily made it to Ecola hiker/biker by the next night even though I had planned on a stealth camp further north by Arch Cape. See Photos!

Incredible views of the Cape. The trail is a bit overgrown and muddy. Eagles abound along the trail. Rugged and slow going, give yourself extra time if hiking from Arch Cape. I did not hit my mileage goals on the day I passed through on my recent OCT hike but it is so beautiful here I could hardly complain!

Nice secluded beach with surf breaks. I stopped here for snack on recent OCT hike. Great spot to replenish water, there are bathrooms and trash cans.

May 28th -Stellar wildflowers in full bloom! Great view of Old Cascade Crest peaks. Not a strenuous hike and suitable for kids and dogs. The seasonal creeks were already drying up but I could get water from the creeks on the flank of Cone Peak. My 8yp son found an arrowhead near the meadows on Cone Peak midway through the loop. Interesting volcanic formations and wildflower meadow lend this medium length day hike loop a backcountry feel

Great views of old cascade crest peaks and meadows! Peregrine falcons nest on the cliffs below the peak. It’s a short hike but the trail is somewhat exposed as it switchbacks by interesting volcanic remnants. The viewing platform at the summit affords a view from Mt Adams to Diamond Peak as well as the South Santiam river drainage. Suitable for kids and dogs there can be late lying snow near the peak on the north side into July but not in 2018. A popular trail and part of a loop that wraps around Irion Mountain and passes over the lower slope of Cone Peak and back through Tombstone prairie to the trailhead.

Great flow after a rain on snow event made this mid March hike truly epic. The falls on this hike are impressive from beginning to end. Easy to moderate hike, mid week is best for avoiding the crowds. Good coffee and food at the lodge
