Snow is starting to accumulate in the upper meadow and above. Slick icy snow on the way up to the saddle, microspikes recommended

The trail leads to nice views of the upper warm springs river and has a hint of painted hills ambiance.. Beautiful!

The PCT section follows easy rolling terrain for 3.5 miles to the cairn marking the left turn up the North ridge route. The trail gives way to a moderate scramble a mile or so up the ridge. The summit block rises about 450’ from the ridge. The 3 pitch climb requires technical climbing ability and equipment. Great views! A climbers trail descends 1400’ across the steep scree field on the west face to the PCT for a 5 mile hike back to TH. Or you can descend along the ridge route the way you came up. Make sure to have plenty of light because the ridge route is sketchier downhill than on the way up. No water along the route

Incredible sweeping view of the west side of the mountain. Sunset was amazing. At least 4 camp spots near the top. King Boletes on the lower switchbacks made this an even more rewarding hike. I did it as a day hike and descended in the dark. See pics!

Great views of Three Finger Jack and Mt Jefferson. Nice trail, narrow though and lots of Mt Bikers. Great old growth forests. No water except near south trailhead. Used this trail to connect to the Old Cascade Crest loop trail.

No nesting eagles this year, one pair of osprey at middle lake. No mosquitos at this time. Tons of Huckleberries, both blue and red Yumm!

    8/12/18- Hazardous Hornets!
Fire ecology on display along Rebel Creek. The 2017 Revel Rock fire left most trees scorched but alive. The trail was apparently used by fire crews for access as some materials are still piled along trail. Otherwise this trail would likely not be open at all. Many trees continue to fall and debris rolling down hillside create new obstacles along trail.
    DANGER-
About 2 miles in on Rebel Creek our dog attacked a hornets nest and turned us back. Our group of three sustained about a dozen stings while we ran away along a narrow section of trail with a steep drop.

Very little snow remains along ridges and summits in the area. Popular Trout lake lives up to its name! . Granite domes along the ridges have large cirques that support lakes. Lots of beetle kill in the forests. Big Fisher Lake was awesome and isolated and the summit above it offers a nice view of Pyramid and other high peaks in the region.

Camping at lake was excellent for an early start to the summit, mid thirties at night, light wind.. Pretty much snow free. Sensitive area, no fires, upper canyon trail closed for restoration.

Astounding views of every single cascade peak from Mt Rainier to Mt. Shasta except for Mt Washington and Mt St Helens. The snow capped Olympic Range in Washington and the Wallowa Mts in e.Oregon were visible as well. Summited at noon and had the entire summit and snowfield all to myself for about 30 minutes. Light wind and not a cloud in the sky. Gaiters for the descent were essential .Trail has patchy snow between 7000’-8000’ but snow free below and above that until you reach the summit. Pool at top is not thawed. Camping at Moraine Lake was amazing and makes for a shorter summit hike, overnight temps in the mid 30s

June 19- wildflowers are in full bloom and an endless stream of butterflies flutter by along the river, no mosquitos or ticks atm. The large population of bats skimming the surface of the water at night makes for quite a spectacle. Ran into the rarely seen Rubber Boa near Wizard Falls fish hatchery on a night hike

Great views, wildflowers in full bloom as of June 19. Cascade Lilies flank the base of the Butte. Lookout is not open to public. Hit this hike early morning as upper portion is quite exposed.. If you are starting at the lower trailhead consider parking along Camp Sherman Road rather than in parking area off road 14, it lines right up with the trail and will save you a half mile or more of trail x2 as you walk around the base of the Butte.
