S Tolman reviewed Little Wassataquoik Lake via Russel Pond Trail

    update: 7/21/18

Spent four days backpacking in Baxter State Park. Stayed one night at Russel Pond at lean-to 5 which is the most secluded, one night a Wassataquoik Lake lean-to then one night a Wassataquoik Stream lean-to. Hike out to Roaring Brook Campground where I parked.

Started at 7am, the parking lot was full from overnights at the lodge. The hike up was well shaded. Hiked to the top at 10:30am. Grabbed a snack bag from the dining hall for $11. Water is available by the office for refills. Hike back down took 2hr. The trail was very busy the closer to the trailhead. I did not notice any trash anywhere near the trail!

For those in shape it is a moderate hike....

An easy ride on a paved loop. Rent bikes at the Cade Cove Campground $7.50 per hr. The deer and bears are out in the morning. Start the ride early, the bike shop opens at 6:30am. The loop road is closed on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 6:30am to 10:00 am to vehicle traffic, but open to foot and bike traffic.

A great place to spend a day is at Wassataquoik Lake prior to arriving at Little Wassatiquoik Lake. Make sure you go to Green Falls next to Wassatiquoik Lake. Rent a canoe ($1 per hr or $8 a day. Rentals are the honor system pay at Russell Pond) there is also a one person kayak, from Wassatiquoik Lake southern shore to the post with blue paint supported by rocks on the east lake shore. From here it is a short trip .1 miles to Green Falls. Fishing is fun if you know where to fish.

The trail from Roaring Brook to Russell Pond is easy. There are a few small hills if you take the trail which is 7.2 miles, the trail is a little steeper is you choose to take the 6.8 mile trail. Canoe rentals are a first come first serve and are $1 an hour or $8 per day. There are also several lean-to and a bunk house for rent. This is a good place to stay and hike to the other ponds and lakes in the area. Moose are also a frequent visitor of the ponds in the are. **Check the weather, there is one stream crossing**

Short and steep walk ending at the top of the rock. If you want to short the hike take the shuttle from the museum to the base of the rock. A great view!

Paved the entire way, easy and flat. Very crowded because of the aforementioned.

Very crowded after 10am. Nice views of the falls. There is a bathroom and water station 1.1 miles from trailhead.

The milage is 5.6 miles to the trail junction, which is at the upper falls. So in/out 11.2 miles. We just got off the trail, backpacking a loop from the trailhead. From the falls trl head it is a non-stop incline. There are 4 small creeks that cross the trail, so a filter is helpful. Use deet!

Just completed, started 6/16 hiked back out 6/17, to the northern trail head. The river on 6/16 was higher due to the rainfall during the week. On Saturday while hiking out river level had dropped about 18". I would hike this during the week, a lot less people! Did not see one person until Saturday. At every river crossing there is a campsite or close by. Trekking poles are very helpful when the river level is high, take your time crossing you can not take back a miss placed step.

We hiked down from the picnic parking lot to the overlook. Then continue down from the overlook to the base of the falls. After a short rest we started back up the trail, but instead of taking same trail back we continue straight, an pass the falls overlook trial. The trial is a old road wide but at an up hill grade. The trail terminus is on Skyline Drive. Just turn left and you will see the sign for the picnic area, if you parked there you are done.

We start at E. Cowpen trailhead to Hickory Ridge - Jack's River Trail, crossed the river and passed Beech Bottom, passed Jack's Falls, crossed river and back up Rice Camp. Good hike the challenge was E. Cowpen to Hickory Ridge. Water is sparse until Jack's River, a small stream is just prior to the first crossing of Jack's River.

Just follow the trail of people, nice waterfalls but very crowded. One thing Glacier is a backpacker's paradise.
