Scott Phillips reviewed Devil's Head Lookout Trail to Fire Tower

Nice day hike you can take the family on. It seems the trail is fairly popular so you will not be alone in prime season. Once you are up top there is a small open valley that looks like someone built a park near the top of the mountain. Perfect place to have a picnic. From here you can take the stairs up and check out the view from the watchtower. You can also go to the other end and climb up some rocks for another great view. They said you can see for 100 miles from the top.

An ideal trail for a first-time backpacker. This trail is largely just a walk in the woods, but you do cross some nice rock formations and a nice overlook area. The section where you're walking through large pine trees might the highlight. The pickle creek crossing is a good objective for a day hike.

Hands down the best trail I've ever done. Landmannalaugar smells like eggs, but the scenery is like nothing you've ever seen before. Makes you understand how truly amazing nature can be. As you make your way up you start encountering snow fields. Hiking through this snow is probably the most difficult part of the trek. Eventually you top out and Hrafntinnusker appears over the hill. Once you leave here, you gain some more elevation and top out on a spot where you look down at Lake Alftavan. This marks a sharp contrast in terrain as it goes from multi-colored mountains to a lush green landscape. Changing terrains is the central theme of this hike. The hike from Alftavatn to Emstrur is easy and marks your first significant stream crossing. Make sure you leave time to explore the Markarfljótsgljúfur canyon at Emstrur. That might be my favorite part of the hike and it looks like some people skip over it. From there the hike to Porsmork is a little more difficult than the previous day but has great scenery. You'll know you are getting closer to Porsmork as you start to notice trees for the first time. Couple things to note: don’t let the phrase river intimidate you. No crossings I did at the end of July should classify as a river. Maybe earlier in the season there is more melt but in late July the crossings were not a big deal. Also, my recommendation would be to spend an extra day in Landmannalaugar. Day hike around there, camp and start your trek the next morning. Check out the ice caves with your extra time at Hrafntinnusker.

Pretty epic hike. The elevation gain towards the end is serious, but so worth it. Ice Lake is an absolutely beautiful alpine lake. While you're up there be sure to check the spur to Island Lake and Fuller Lake as well. Take your time up there and soak it in. Hopefully you'll have better weather than we did.

It’s all about them alpine lakes ya’ll. What a great place to spend a night. I made it up to the third lake but didn’t make it to the pass due to weather. Next time.

Great little hike. It’s easy until that last mile, then you start to feel it in your legs. Once you arrive at the basin though you will see why it is worth the wait. A great spot to have lunch or camp for the night. There are ample camping spots all around with great scenery.

Not much of a hiking trail but great camping!

Probably the best short dayhike in the Ozarks. Pretty easy with a rewarding view at the end. The road going up is no joke though. Surprised how rough the road is for how popular the trail is.

Scott Phillips reviewed Ponca to Pruitt Via Buffalo River Trail

I hike this after two days of good rain and it was gorgeous. All the dry creek beds you’re used to passing over were transformed into gushing waterfalls. The river was up and loud. The trail is not easy so take your time and enjoy yourself. Markings are prominent enough where you shouldn’t have any trouble finding your way.

Scott Phillips reviewed Centerpoint to Goat Trail

Not much of a trail till you hit the goat trail. Once you are there though you are rewarded with one of the best views in the Ozarks. Take a seat, have a snack and soak it in. Know your limits, but don't let the goat trail intimidate you. It's a sidewalk.

Scott Phillips reviewed North Sylamore Creek Trail

Loved this trail. I hiked from Barkshed to Allison and was impressed by the scenery. Massive bluffs, rock outcroppings and formations much like you would see along the Buffalo River, only on a slightly smaller scale. Ended up camping at a great spot by a big bluff and possibly the smallest waterfall on Earth about 1.5 miles from Blanchard. I got a shuttle from Sylamore Creek Camp which works great just note they are located one mile from the trailhead. I would also add this is possibly the best marked trail I’ve been on.

A good trail with rewarding views at the top. You must put forth an effort to see the views, but that’s why we hike, right? Once you’re at the top make sure to check out the rim trail with great views all around. Rocks here are covered with beautiful, vibrant moss a lichen. There is also a water spigot at the top with clean water if you want to fill up. Do not camp at the top if you are backpacking.

A nice walk in the woods. Some nice elevation changes that will get your heart pumping. The highlight of this trail are the fantastic camping spots by the creek. Several have pre-made chairs made from rocks with good back support. The trail has nice rock formations with moss and lichen.

Scott Phillips reviewed Big Piney Trail

Pretty vanilla trail. Not a lot of elevation change and not very challenging. Just a walk in the woods which is ok sometimes. Trail can be a little unclear so make sure you’re paying attention. I went in October and did not need to change shoes for any creek crossings. Saw a lot of mushrooms due to an abundance of rain leading up to my trip.
