Scott P reviewed Linn Run State Park Loop

I enjoy this hike. It’s fast, not crowded, but scenic. Wear waterproof boots. I crossed numerous springs and plenty of mud, normal for Spring. At one point the trail is the stream. At higher elevations there are a lot of thorny plants.

Water level was high enough that crossing red creek requires taking shoes off or getting wet socks. We did just the red creek portion and will come back later in summer when water levels are lower. Cool trail otherwise.

A hard hike/climb. The first part is relatively flat compared to the second part from the basin onward. So if you are exhausted upon reaching the basin just know you have 1,700 more feet of climbing boulders almost straight up. Go in the morning before 10am, although there is shade from trees.

So the whole stay left thing is a little vague if it’s your first time. After the basin there are two directions to choose from. Right is Siphon Draw. Two groups ahead of me chose the left unnamed trail specifically because of the stay left advice. Not sure if you can make it that way. As you work your way up the draw stay left as some trails will take you right. Then just before reaching the saddle there is a wall of rocks, but just left is a path.

I had 4 liters of water and used all of it, but I also started later at 9am. Overall not really my kind of trail. Glad I didn’t give up but won’t do it again.

Only did 800 feet climb up to about the 2nd knob on the ridge. Saw a tortoise.

Great little hike for the start/end of the day. All paved. Open 4am-10pm.

A really nice trailhead and most of the trail is sand/gravel, which can be slippery coming down. I wore Brooks Cascadia trail running shoes and didn’t slip once. The trail starts off with a slight upward climb, but then gets pretty steep a half mile in. It’s not as steep at the higher elevations. The trail to The Lookout was more rocky and narrow. I saw only one other person. Great hike.

Great way to wake up in the morning. The crowds are no joke. At 6:30 am I barely got a parking spot. It was steep, but a good hike.

Scott P reviewed Roaring Run Trail

First off I counted 36 stream crossings from the top of Roaring Run to the merger with Painted Rocks. Of these, 30 are not easy in Spring with snowmelt. So either go in Summer or bring waterproof boots.

Wear pants. There are fields of thorny vines on most trails with some areas overgrown. This was in mid March.

Otherwise I enjoyed the hike. Didn’t see anyone else.

Duff is a great trail for short, steep hiking and trail running. I generally do a different loop, Bloodroot, Roundtop, Wake Robin, Fernwood, Forbes, Black Cohosh and back up to Round Top. Comes out around 4 miles.

I did part of this as a day hike. Highway 30 to a mile south of I-76, out and back, about 10 miles each way. Trail is like most PA trails with a lot of small rocks to step on, over, and around. Only good view is on top of Beam Rocks. Not much elevation gain. Lots of shade. Several connector trails along the way in case you don’t want to do it all.

A great view awaits you after a steady uphill climb. Once you reach the ridge line the views are plentiful.

The trail down to the river is pretty steep, and definitely more of a difficult rating compared to other trails on AllTrails.
