Scott McClintock reviewed Vernal and Nevada Falls (The Mist) Trail

Great.day hike. The first falls-Vernal- is deceptively close but about 1000 feet elevation gain from Valley floor. The last trek climbs granite stairs but is rewarding with close and misty closeup views of the falls. Nothing wrong with turning back here.

But! The hike up to Nevada Falls rewards you with multiple views of this 594' fall and splendid views of Half Dome and back down the Valley. The climb is not for the faint of heart but the views from the top are fantastic and breath taking.

We took the John Muir Trail back down which offered varied and equally spectacular views back on the falls, Liberty Dome and Half Dome (you can recreate a famous postcard pic from here). Easier descent than retracing the granite steps.

Tips: Start early to avoid crowds and avoid weekends. We went at 8:00am on a hot July Monday. Also take plenty of water and power bars. There's no potable water at the falls though we did refill at Nevada and treated with purifying drops.

It took us 7.5 hours for the 8.8 mile trek -slow - traveling with our 13 and 10 year old. Lots of breaks and lingering at the falls. Oh we did assist with a lady suffering from heat exhaustion and dehydration (search and rescue had to come assist). Drink water and enjoy. :)

Hot July day. Lots of water but worth the hike up. Only went one way and met family at top to then hike Sentinel Dome before star gazing later.

Good hike among varying terrain. We use the Shulls Mill trailhead for some variety and less crowded.
