Ashley Schmidt reviewed Conundrum Creek Trail to Conundrum Hot Springs

My partner and I did this entire hike (round trip) in a day, and it was rough. I have a Suunto trail watch and I tracked the hike closer to 13 miles one way - I’m not sure who’s numbers are more accurate but my watch uses GPS and tends to be accurate on nearly all of the hikes I track.

That being said, this hike is beautiful. The elevation gain is gradual and the most intense at the end right before the hot spring.

You cross three man made LOG bridges before getting to the hot springs. There are multiple rock and downed tree crossings - these don’t count ;)

Wear sunscreen. Bring a first aid kit for blisters. But be prepared for a stunning visit at the top.

Do us all a favor and if you see people eating in the pool or leaving trash, speak up. There’s permits in place for a reason and we want to keep this place as beautiful as it has been for centuries. Some people just don’t get it.

Completed this trail 10 June 2018. I do this trail once or twice a year and always love it. Because we had a dry winter there isn’t as much snowpack as previous years.

The trailhead used to start next to a mound of black rocks, but they have opened a parking lot that you pass before this.

No snow until after the large river crossing. Nothing too bad until the top, near the summit.

Your feet will get wet, be prepared.

Follow footsteps in snowpack to reach the Lake.

Another beautiful hike, will be beautiful in about a month when wildflowers are in full bloom.

Started at Echo Lake TH. Made it to the reservoir and kept going. To the right of the Rez there is snowpack that is melting. I post holed a little, but was fine. Passed the private property and on up to the lake. The trail near the lake was snowed in so I couldn’t find the rest of the trail. Had lunch to the right/backside of the lake then turned back.

I imagine in the summer the trail continues on past the lake. I looked at the map where you register for wilderness camping and noticed you can summit Evans from this trail, so I know the trail wraps around past the lake, I just couldn’t find the trail because of snow.

Anyway, I’ll give it another shot this summer. Still a decent hike for 5/12/18.

Pretty basic hike for anyone with medium to excelled hiking fitness. Still enjoyed it though.

I love this hike. I do it once or twice a year. This was my first time in 2017 and I hiked it Saturday July 1.

Was on the trail by 730 am and didn't see a single person until coming down from the summit. I made it to the lake in 2 hours flat, but could've done it in shorter time if the snow drifts had been melted. You have to scramble around them/up them the best you can to find the trail. It's still very wet, make sure you have water proof hiking boots or your feet will get soaked from some of the run off.

Once the snow drifts melt, this hike will be wonderful.

Harder elevation gain in the beginning, levels out through most of it, then elevation gain at the end signifies you are close to the lake. Enjoy!

I did this hike Sunday 18-Sep-2016.

I arrived at the trailhead at 0445 and there were about 6 spots left. If you are hiking before the sun comes up I would 100% recommend a headlamp. However, there were a few hikers I came across who were not using headlamps.

After you emerge from the trees, you are in a pretty bare alpine tundra. This day, the wind was absolutely insane, even before the sun rose and on my way down. I did not bring gloves - which I regret. But a beanie stayed securely on my head with my headlamp holding it in place. The wind nearly knocked me over quite a few times and I felt like I was hiking through cement on the ascent.

The first lake you see down below is NOT Chasm. Keep pushing.

Take note that it is fairly easy to lose the trail to the lake once you get in sight of the Privy by the ranger station. The trail continues to the right of the Privy, and you scramble up a lot of rocks to get to the other side.

The hike was challenging for me due to the wind, but the views were well worth it. Sunrise was one of the most beautiful sites I've seen in a while. I am only giving the trail/hike 4 stars because the trail gets wonky at some parts, but nothing is perfect :)
