Sarah Duclos reviewed Main Trail (Blue) to Mount Major

NIGHT HIKE - I had not hiked Mount Major since I was a child, so it was almost a brand new experience for me. The erosion on the Main Trail is CRAZY - like walking with tree roots at eye level in some places. I always like to include in my reviews that I still consider myself to be a pretty novice hiker, in moderate shape with some sports injuries (knee, ankles). Some guidebooks grade Major as EASY and that's not 100% the case. It's MOSTLY EASY, until you get to a handful of slabs at the end. Me and my pup (who is way more agile than me) had to navigate portions very slowly and carefully to make it to the top - and I had to resort to some rock climbing knowledge in order to do so.

All in all though - this was a BLAST to hike in the dark. I know that it's a popular spot, so it was super fun to have the summit all to ourselves. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed some hot chocolate at the top!

The holy grail of kid AND pet friendly. We took my 5 year old niece on this trail for her first hike EVER. She did great and there is a wide rock ledge to enjoy a picnic lunch up at the top. Many many dogs. Our dog gets really excited and wants to play with other puppies, so watch out for people who do not keep their dogs on leash! This wasn't a problem for us until we got to the top and then a friendly pup came barreling right through our lunch! HAHA! Stay alert out there! Great view for very little effort.

I always like to preface review with a description of myself in case that helps people out there! I'd consider myself a novice hiker, a bit out of shape, with arthritis in one knee and tendinitis in both ankles. This was my second 4,000 footer and it was DIFFICULT but worth it. We brought our dog with us - who was an incredible trooper - but that diminished our water supply for our descent. I wish I had packed more water and snacks. Ascent took roughly 3.5 hours and descent (because of shaky shaky legs) took 4 hours 10 minutes (partially in the dark - which was a little scary event though we had light). Despite the challenges, the 360 views up top are INCREDIBLE and our late descent rewarded us with the view of a young moose walking ahead of us as we left the access road.

Easy, with beautiful river views. Went in early spring 2017 and was able to easily complete, even with snow still on the ground.

Little challenging in places, but a gorgeous view awaits at the top. This one was great for our pup (a mastiff)!

October 14, 2015 - my first major hike with my husband, first 4,000 footer and first time staying in an AMC Hut. Holy struggle bus! It was the last night of the season when we went and we hiked from autumn into WINTER. It was snowing with a crazy windchill when we finally arrived at the top. When we went, the trail had recently been redirected and the terrain was rough! Big boulder staircase and you turn a corner and whoop! There's another one! I said to my husband at one delirious point, "I think Jesus himself is going to be waiting for us at the top of this mountain!"

Croo was awesome, the adventure was awesome, the only reason I give this a 3-star is because it's a brutal hike for not a ton of payoff in the view department. The summit marker is very anticlimactic - smack in the middle of a grove of trees! Bottom line, I'm glad that I did it, not sure I would purposefully take this route again.

Firstly, the Lafayette Campground was POPPING. So many cars. You may find yourself hiking before your hike - from the parking lot to the trailhead!

Lonesome Lake Trail is undergoing some maintenance so I found myself detouring to the Hi-Cannon Trail, the Dodge Cutoff and finally to the Fishin' Jimmy Trail to make a stop at the Lonesome Lake Hut.

I'm a fairly novice hiker, and I have arthritis in one knee and I found stretches of Hi-Cannon to be challenging. There were lots of rocks and roots to navigate. Even more treacherous for me were well traveled sections of the trail that resembled sandy waterslides. Should have brought poles, they would've been a great help!

Personal challenges aside, the hut's location is well worth the effort. Beautiful spot to take a restful lunch break and a swim before returning to the Lafayette Campground.
