Sahil Kabra reviewed Chicken Spring Lake Trail

I hiked the Chicken Spring Lake Trail on Memorial Day weekend. The first few miles are gradual, but it gets progressively steeper till you reach Cottonwood Pass. There is a ridge a little further off which offers a beautiful view of Big Whitney Meadows. It started to snow on the way back, and getting back to Horseshoe Meadows was more difficult than it should have been.

Crystal Cove perimeter loop is a great, moderate to difficult hike in the beautiful Crystal Cove State Park. The trail is well marked and there are quite a few people hiking and biking here, especially on weekends. On a clear day, you'll be rewarded with beautiful view of the ocean. Be careful of mountain bikers going down. Beware of snakes. I saw a little one crossing the trail.

Cerro Alto Trail is starts at the Cerro Alto Campground in the Los Padres National Forest about in between Morro Bay and Atascadero on CA-41. The trail is between 4.5 to 6 miles long depending on the starting point. It is a very steep trail, with an elevation gain of about 1650ft. However, the view from the summit, especially on a clear day is absolutely worth it. You can see the California Central Coast from stretching from at least Cayucos to San Louis Obispo with rolling hills in the backdrop. This is one of the few trails in the area which is dog friendly.

This is a great hike, which can be easily done in a few hours. This trail is popular with people, especially on weekends, so be ready to walk to the trailhead. I'd recommend starting this trail by going to the Falls first, which will save you the climb on the road in the way back.

Overall, an excellent hike. First 3 miles are quite gradual and offer a fantastic view of the surrounding valley. However, after crossing the tree line, wind picks up quite suddenly. Last mile is very steep. I'd tell everyone to make sure to turn back as soon as the weather turns. Chances of lightning strikes are very real.

It is a short hike which takes you to the arch and back. It can be quite hit in summers and there is no shade, so be prepared and carry water.
