S Stumme reviewed Mount Kearsarge North

Hiked up on July 12 - I am not in great cardiac shape and have some height issues - loved loved this trail. It is all up - but doable if taken slowly. One dog threw up on the middle of the trail- so if you take dogs, please figure that out. Poles helped and there are steep sections. Bugs more towards the trail head, but present. Take water.

I hiked up Jewell today just sort of the junction with gulf. Jewell is an easy trail to the timberline — it gets steeper towards gulf. Once you get above timberline - the views are incredible. I was hiking alone and early.

Nice quick hike. Busy. Some trail work on bridges - there is a make-shift bridge right past the one that is being reset. Lot of people out there without water - which amazes me because it is still a hike and mainly uphill on the way to the falls. The falls are a great surprise at the end.

It is incredibly busy.... almost two lanes of traffic on all legs of the trail. I went up bridle and down falling waters and may have been the good choice on a busy day. However - falling waters is relentless on the knees and never really levels out until the end. Going down there are a lot of trees/roots in the right or down side of trail for balance. Left side was for people going up. Poles were helpful.

Windy at top and required a jacket. I should have had gloves.

I went up early at 5:30 and people were already coming down who had gone up at 1:00 am to catch sunrise or were trail running.

It is incredible for the views in the ridge.

Hike - Saturday July 7 a beautiful day

I would give it another star if the bugs weren’t so bad yesterday. I took the logging road alternative up to the trail and finally had to put my bug jacket on. After the ledges they were better. The logging road is nice on the way down because you can let you legs out and take long strides. Coming down on the trail, I kept wanting to go left or down following the stones for water runoff and had to keep myself “right” or higher to stay on the path.

Nice hike today- challenging for me because I am not cardio conditioned.... it is getting buggy with the recent rain and hot weather. Mosquitoes are growing in muddy areas and water pools. I used a lot of bug spray and kept moving. Had a hard time finding a few trail markers near the summit and they were incredibly obvious on the way down. Also appreciated the trail structures on the way down with stone placement, steps and run off drainage.

Did the falls loop on the way back and that was beautiful. Glad I saved it for the way down because it was a nice treat. The trail is steep (roots) by the falls and then steps.
