Beautiful hike, moderately challenging (mainly long with some short spurts of elevation gain), with a very rewarding endpoint under the waterfall. Bring some food and have a picnic at the waterfall.. it's really peaceful there and worth hauling the extra weight.

    Cheers!

Very nice hike, with pretty decent views of Canon City and the Royal Gorge! Definitely try to make it during the cactus bloom as there are a ton of cacti throughout the trail!

    Cheers!

Such a wonderful hike! Beautiful views throughout, moderately challenging, with quite a bit of wildlife (mule deer, marmot, pica, birds/hawks). It was pretty snowy while hiking over the pass, so make sure to bring at least poles +/- crampons. Make sure to get transportation EARLY through Dolly's or Alpine Express, as they run out of permits weeks/months ahead of your trip ($20 each way/person). The Aspen to CB hike is much harder than the way back, so I would recommend going from Aspen to CB, staying a few nights to enjoy the charm of CB, and hike back. You can get a shuttle to take you back or transport your car to CB from Aspen, but I think this is a waste of money and a missed opportunity to enjoy an absolutely beautiful hike. It is about 2/3 downhill on the way back, and much easier than the way to CB. Don't be lazy, finish the loop, and hike back :)

As an aside, rent a hardtail mountain bike and do the Lupine Trail to the Lower Loop trail. Such an awesome ride with gorgeous scenery throughout! It took me a couple hours, but I stopped to take a bunch of pictures. I rented a bike up at the Elevation Hotel for $35/half day (maybe a bit more expensive than in town, but higher up the hill and closer to the trail). Throw your bike on the free shuttle that goes through town and up the hill, and do it a few times if you wish!

    Happy hiking!

Unfortunately, we weren't able to make it past the keyhole this AM due to wind, ice, poor visibility, and crushing cold. The forecast was actually right this time, but we figured we would give it a go anyways! Left at 1 AM, made it to the keyhole by 4:45 AM, tried to wait it out for an hour and a half but the weather didn't clear. Definitely coming back with better weather asap!

Really fun hike with beautiful views and multiple changes in landscape as you ascend! We started at 6:45 AM, and the lots were full so we have to climb up a bit on the street which was no big deal. The trail is meticulously well maintained until it gets rocky about half way up. There are tons of beautiful lookout points for you to enjoy while grabbing a drink too.

As far as difficulty, this was an "easy" 14'er, without a doubt since it only took us about 4.5 hours in total with plenty of breaks. With that said, I saw many people who had no business attempting a 14'er in painfully underprepared attire, who began the hike after 10 AM.. and I was legitimately worried for their safety. Although this is an "easy" hike for someone who is fit or lives in the area, it would be extremely rigorous for those who are not used to altitude or sustained physical activity; seems like common sense right? That's what I though too.

The only reason I gave this 4 stars is because of the ridiculous amount of people that indulged in Bierstadt with me today. It was a Sunday, so I was asking for it, however, it was packed even for 14'er standards. Don't let that dissuade you though.. we still had a wonderful time and got some exercise in!

    Prost!

My wife and I loved this hike! Don't be fooled though, this hike is a grind in some places and you should prepare accordingly for a tough day. We camped overnight about 0.5 mile away from the trailhead with no issues finding a place on a Sunday night, and started around 7 am. We summited with our group right around noon (5 hours including quite a few breaks). There are several false summits that can be demoralizing if you don't know about them in advance, but rest assured, you'll make it eventually! The trail is very well maintained, and dry all the way up. The views are incredible too, ranging from alpine landscape, to the twin lakes, to the vast mountain ranges to the S and SW. Here's a few tips:

    - start early (before 7), the parking lot is not very big and it's quite a ways to the summit
    - bring a lot of water (I drank 4 L of water the entire day) and lots of high energy snacks
    - bring layers - it wasn't too cold at the summit for us, but a couple days prior, my friends were freezing their kahunas off up there in coats and gloves.
    - bring trekking poles!! This was clutch on the way down, which is very steep for the first mile down from the peak. At the very least, grab a walking stick in the woods on the way up to save yourself an avulsed fibula.

Have fun! Don't worry about the distance, time, or how much longer the days going to last.. this is an absolutely incredible hike that you should take in the whole way.

    Cheers, and happy hiking!

Very fun hike, lots of wildlife and wildflowers, and pretty challenging in parts. Having microspikes made our lives easier towards the higher elevations, but not a necessity. We found a really nice campsite near the falls about 3/4 the way up and set up shop. It was very peaceful up there, and would definitely recommend it to backpackers of all skill levels.
