Boom King reviewed Italian Bar Trail

My first trip on the trail in a while. The road is rougher coming into the trailhead, you will want high clearance. The trail has not been maintained so will be slow going. It's steep but a pretty trail. Hopefully the road will get back to normal later this year after this monster winter.

It is a paved road to the river. There are trails on the way down that give you different options to explore.

You climb about 1k in .9 mile at the start of this, no switchbacks and some flat/downhill stretches in that section, so the grade can be pretty steep in parts. Great training hill if you are a trail runner, and a blast on the downhill stretch. You can take pig farm trail on the left, partway up if you want to shorten the loop

This is a good example of a lake transitioning to a meadow. Once you get to the lake keep hiking up along the west side of the lake. You can also hike up the trail along snow creek for good views of half dome

The "trail" to the grove is a moderately steep paved road. Once you get to the grove there is a nice short interpretative trail. There is also one downed tree the kids can crawl through. If you have time to only visit one sequoia grove in Yosemite go to the Mariposa grove, but if you are in the neighborhood this is a pleasant hike.

Most of this trail follows an old rail bed, so except for near the trail head it is very easily graded (and just a few hills at the start otherwise). There is a spur trail that will take you into Portola SP near the HQ. The trail Is good for hiking running and beginner MTB. I have seen wild pigs on the trail.

I know this is an urban trail, but even with that in mind the trail was way crowded on a weekday afternoon, and there was garbage everywhere. Not going back.

There are lots of options for planning hikes here, the tracks are very well maintained and it's a fun spot to run. The map for this posting shows a short loop trail that is pretty flat and shaded above the river but in full sun for mostly the rest of the trail. There is a nice spot with a picnic bench on that trail. If you are on the Down & Up trail I think they are still grazing sheep there to control the thistle. You can really see the impact. There's a shepherd's trailer along the trail.

Nice trail to a pretty valley, but it is way out there. Parking is at Talbot campground and at a day use area just before the campground. For trail running, it's mostly a non technical trail and a lot of fun on the way back. In the meadows in the valley during mid summer the trail may not be visible in parts because it can be totally overgrown. There's a couple of stream crossings, and a use trail to a small pool before you cross the MF (the pool is upstream of the crossing), which would be a nice spot for a break.

Nice wooded trail if you are in the area. Terrain and local views are very typical of many other trails in the area. The trail takes you to a pretty spot at the bottom of the canyon, though there are several claims at the creek. You can extend your hike up the other side if you like.

Great training hike or run. I'd agree about the recent reviews about signage, but like others have said if you just take left hand turns after you get to the top you will do a 4 mile loop. Shortly after you get to the top there is a small clearing to the west of the trail that opens up to great views down canyon and to Auburn. Also, if you have a Golden Poppy pass (or don't mind paying the $10), a good place to park is the Quarry Road trailhead, and then cross 49 to a short spur trail to the loop.

The highlight of this trail is the view of Castle Peak. This can be combined on a longer hike or run from Castle Pass and down the Hole in the Ground trail back to the Castle Valley road. It's a fun non-technical trail to run.

Nice hike through oak woodlands and meadows. A little climb from the moody road side brings you into the meadows. A trail continues up black mountain, and you can also access rancho San Antonio

(Continued. . .got away from me)

I am considering the peters creek loop the trail from the center of Portola SP to the old grove on Peters Creek. I think it is about 10 miles RT. This is my favorite trail mid-peninsula due to the remoteness and the old growth stand if redwoods. Makes a fantastic run and hike.

Not much here. You go up an old ranch road, turn around and come back. There are some benches near the end. This would be more of a destination with an improved trail system. The vegetation does not make this a great place for cross country.

If you find yourself in the neighborhood, purisima creek redwoods is a better destination.

There is a nice easy road through the park to Portola State park. It used to be a rail bed. Keep an eye out for wild pigs, used to see them once in a while along the road.

Agree, they have a great trail system here. Nice walks along the creek and up the old Russell road skid trail (dinosaur hill). The upper part of the park is great, you can park on kings mountain and get to the dean trail or near the archery area with lots of nice trails around there.

Great day hike or run through a spectacular east side canyon to a beautiful peaceful lake. An excellent choice from there is to continue uphill to lakes at the border of the Hoover wilderness and Yosemite for an overnight trip.
