A friend and I completed the loop last week 6/21-6/23. We started out clockwise on the trail. Best idea as the elevation decreases about 1.5 Miles into the hike. We initially planned on staying at Silver Lake but chose to move on to Lower Twin Lake. Most of the way was devastated due to the 2016 Redding fires. There wasn’t any shade and so many downed trees in that area. Once you get a mile or so from LTL, the scenery starts to pick back up. This was about 7.32 Miles according to my gps tracker. We hiked over on Friday to rainbow lake and chose not to continue on to Snag lake due to once again the area was burned out. Saturday morning we had a bear in our camp rummaging through our packs (yes we did have a bear can and all things smelly away from camp). It got an ice pack and tore that apart. We hollered at it and it did leave camp. Exciting but scary too. The remainder of the hike out on Saturday was approximately 5 Miles, again according to my gps tracker. It’s a beautiful hike with two sections (about 3/4 of a mile each) that are uphill. It was my friends first time packing in and she did great. Our packs were approximately 35lbs each. I love this area and will surly be back again. Also make sure to bring bug spray and the mosquitoes were bad at times. The water wasn’t bad either once the sun hit it daily. Leeches in there so be careful.

10/14/2017 We started out at the Ranger Station at about 830 in the morning. Nice and Chilly. Two adults and a 5 almost 6 year old. The adults packed all in and the kiddo packed her own water and sleep wear. Just one over night at Lower Twin Lake. The hike itself wasn't horrible. It was easy to moderate the majority of the way. Minimal complaints from the young one going in. More going out as there are two good sizes grades coming back out. Short though. Overall the was good. Not too bad for a day hike or evening packing in for a few days. Camping for Upper and Lower Twin lakes are decent. The East side of the lakes are best and more flat. The west side not so much. Plus in the evening when it cools down you'll have the sun for warmth much later than the west side. Overall, it was beautiful.

Additionally, go on a weekday if possible. So many people on this trail during the weekends and in the valley as well.

This was a moderate to difficult trail (in some spots). We didn't travel all the way up as I had a 5 year old and wasn't comfortable once I got to the point where the hand rail was absent. Kid who doesn't listen too well and sketchy trails don't mix well. :-) Overall we got to the vista point of the waterfall. I used trekking poles and my child did as well at some points. With some acclimation, it would have been an easier hike overall. Beautiful views, lots of photos ops. Overall it was a few miles long round trip. I would recommend this for sure.

Once you find the trail head..... Signs are somewhat misleading along trails. This hike is simple, can be long or short depending on time of year as you can cross over the "lake" during the summer early fall season. It is a two mile or a five mile hike depending on which route you take. I did have a 5 year old and saw many others with even younger.
Beautiful views. "Lake" was low this time of year but still amazing views.

Completed this trail on 7/21 with my 5 y/o daughter. We completed approximately 10 miles round trip. Very easy. Bathrooms are about at the 2 mile out mark. Make sure to pack water and snacks. The "most difficult" part of the trail is the return near the restrooms on that hill coming back up:only because of being tired at this point. :-) Beautiful scenery.
