I really enjoyed doing this trail with two of my friends on a Sunday. We arrived to the trailhead at 10 a.m. and we’re happy to see there was a free parking lot with a port o potty and hand sanitizer.

The difficulty is on the upper side of moderate for folks with intermediate hiking experience. It took us about 5 hours hiking a pace of 2.4 miles per hour and taking a 15-20 minute lunch. Most of the elevation gain is the last 2.7 miles of the trail. I would not recommend bringing people who are not in shape on this trail and if you do, expect for it take 6+ hours depending on how much they struggle.

We saw several banana slugs along the way and loved the scenery overall. This is a mixed use trail also used by trail runners and mountain bikers, so hikers should be extra aware that those folks are likely going to need to pass you at some point. The trail wasn’t terribly crowded either like some other Bay Area hikes can be.

Overall, a trail that is definitely worth experiencing if you are in moderately good shape.

There is a kiosk at the entrance to the park which will collect $5/car to enter the park if the kiosk is staffed. When I went on a Saturday in January at 10:30 a.m. though, there was no one at the kiosk so we did not have to pay the entrance free. I would recommend that you expect to pay $5/car in case the kiosk is open when you come though.

Note: The trailhead is not the first parking lot that you see after the kiosk. Drive father down the road into the park to find the trailhead parking lot.

This trail will feel moderate for moderately experienced hikers and will feel difficult for inexperienced hikers or folks who are out of shape. This park reminds me of Briones Regional Park with rolling hills, city views, and lots of cows grazing in the park. Except I saw about twice as many cows here as I did in Briones Regional Park.

Definitely watch your feet for cow feces because it’s pretty much everywhere. I also couldn’t really find a good place to break for lunch midway through the hike, so settled for a scratchy patch of grass in semi-shade in between piles of cow feces.

There is a steep ascent on part of this trail that will freak out inexperienced hikers and make them rethink coming. If you bring a group of people with a mix of hiking experience, this is where you will see the most difference in people’s fitness levels and most likely people will not be able to hike at the same pace as at flatter parts of the trail.

This hike is ideal to do during cold and cloudy weather since there is full sun exposure pretty much the entire trail. Make sure you bring sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses even when going during winter. Also bring plenty of water since the sun will wear you out.

I’m glad I experienced this park, but don’t see myself coming back soon.

I was able to find parking near 8th & Irving for this hike and noticed that there is 2 hour free parking Mon-Fri or unlimited free parking Saturday and Sunday. I would recommend doing this hike on the weekend if you drive here since this hike will take longer than two hours for most hikers of average ability.

I kept on getting semi-lost on this trail even with the downloaded map and kept on having to make micro-corrections to my route along the way. It’s a mixed use trail and I saw walkers, hikers, runners and cyclists along the way. There will also be plenty of tourists just standing around.

You will be on a mix of paved sidewalks and dirt trails, but at no point on the trail will it feel remote. I felt very safe doing this alone as a woman during a weekend day. However, I don’t recommend coming alone because this trail can be rather boring to do by yourself. If you do this trail, I would recommend bringing a friend so you could have a conversation along the way.

I’m glad I experienced this trail, but I don’t see myself prioritizing coming back anytime soon as someone from out of town.

While I think this trail is definitely worth checking out, I don’t think it’s a 5 star trail if you prefer longer hikes.

There is a parking lot with free parking and when my friend and I got there around 8:15 a.m. there was still a ton of parking left. There is also a bathroom with flush toilets and soap which is really nice. I also liked that the Sutro Baths are right next to the trailhead.

The main thing I didn’t like was how short it was and also the return route on the loop which is mainly on pavement. This is a great trail of you don’t have a lot of time or are going with people who are out of shape. Definitely do not plan this as a day hike though since it will take you less than 1.5 hours to do the whole thing.

I would feel safe doing this trail alone and would do it again maybe next year or the year after. It’s definitely not the best hike around though as the reviews and ratings would lead you to believe.

This was such a wonderful urban hike and one that I definitely want to do again in the near future. If you are visiting San Francisco, this one is an absolute must since it takes you through Chinatown, Little Italy and down along the Waterfront in The Embarcadero.

I have visited San Francisco more times than I can count and still found this hike very worthwhile since it took me on routes I would have never discovered on my own including down steps and through various parks.

I started on a Saturday morning at 7 a.m. which ended up being the absolute perfect time to go since the streets were empty and I could work on my pace without having to navigate other pedestrians. I was able to hike it at 3 miles an hour and I’m currently only a moderately experienced hiker.

Definitely do this hike! You won’t regret it!

This is a good park to visit if you are already in the area, but it’s not the kind of place that you would seek out otherwise.

First of all, the trail is both short and paved. It pretty much is a giant rectangle that goes along the perimeter of Capitol Park. If you live in the area, I think this would be a good place to practice a 5K in the early morning before people start coming to work at the nearby office buildings.

It gets very busy over the lunch hour, so while you could still walk then, you will have to dodge lots of people if you want to practice running during that time.

Overall, a nice place for a walk, but nothing to seek out for people outside of the immediate area.

This trail is on the easier side of moderate if you go with people who have at least some hiking experience.

This hike was enjoyable in January and I thought to myself I would not want to do this during summer.

Lots of Joshua trees and some cacti along the trail. The first part of the trail before the loop is pretty flat and most of the elevation gain is when you start the loop. While this is called a loop trail, it is more like a lasso, with the loop only being at the very end. The top of the loop/lasso is a great place to break for lunch.

This is a great hike if you are camping at Black Rock Canyon Campground since the Trailhead starts from here.

Bring plenty of water for this hike and plan for it to take you 3-3.5 hours depending on your pace. Faster if you are trail running instead of hiking.

We parked at the Bear Creek Staging Area which costs $3 for parking if someone is at the kiosk or it's free to park if nobody is there to collect your money when you drive in.

This hike is a series of trails, so make sure you print out the pdf of the park map to bring with you and compare it to the map from All Trails. Even with that, we still managed to get lost. There is a lot of cow poop along the trail, so you will want to watch your feet so you don't step in any. You will also pass by cows who are near the trail, but they didn't bother us when we went and I made sure to give them space.

This trail made for a good winter hike and there was a bench mid way at 'Table Top' where we had our lunch. There are no significant features along the trail other than rolling hills and a couple small pools of water. I wouldn't take someone hiking here to impress them, but it's a good trail if you want to experience hiking at this park at least once.
