Regina Hammond reviewed Blue Sky Reserve to Mount Woodson Trail

One of my favorites/ from Blue Sky preserve its a mile down before switching back up to Lake Poway and continuing to the summit. Bring more water and electrolytes than u expect. It is always hotter near the lake compared to the parking lot and does cool off as you climb. Also don’t underestimate water for your dog!!

Regina Hammond reviewed Chiquito Trail to Chiquito Falls

Completed 11-12-16- 7 miles out and back. Temps were moderate in 80'. Much better than a month ago! Started at 2 pm ish. A trail race was happening at the same time in this trail so it was busy. The trail descends if u start clockwise by the restroom - then meanders around. At "T" stay left to follow sign for Chiquito trail and not San Juan. The climb up is technical and a grind if you are jogging but great views. The trail downhill is rocky - I went passed the Falls another mile or so. The waterfall was bone dry and nothing to see. The trail past the turnoff for the falls enters an area where grasses are very tall and is buggy. I didn't like this part and prefer to be up. However it's still nice and shaded.

Regina Hammond reviewed Pikes Peak from the Crags Trail

Completed this 8/2/16. Perfect weather. Have hiked Barr Trail 4 times in about 12 hrs and have run up Barr Trail via the Ascent several times.
The third mile was a kicker due to the incline and some feet issues.
Lost the trail at the top through the Boulder section - could not find the path despite the obvious huge pile of rocks guiding the way! Wasted an hour wandering over boulders. On the way down it was a piece of cake and we saw the boulder trail - very obvious on the way down!!!

Regina Hammond reviewed Mount San Antonio Mount Baldy Notch Trail

Started at the Angeles Road porta pots. There must have been several large groups yesterday as cars were parked along both sides of the divide for over a mile. Did not expect that - also lots of cars parking and moving around near icehouse canyon on the drive up Mt Baldy Road. I was on time driving there - 2 hrs but waiting for cars and driving carefully up Mt Baldy road took some time, you might want to add a few more minutes to your trip.
Walk up the Jeep Road/ Mt Baldy Road. There was some shade which was welcome. I didn't realize it was a jeep road and was disappointed when cars drove by quickly kicking up dust clouds in my face. My route was a bit different than others. About 3 miles up to the restaurant in an hour. There wasn't sure which way but saw many people taking the ski trail, Rollercoaster, which is a straight up climb in loose gravel. You feel the elevation here. However, you can choose to take the Jeep Road instead.
You turn onto Devils Backbone - which felt like a real trail finally. Very great views and well maintained trail. There are some short edges as people noted but if you walk straight and aren't unstable on your feet, its fine. Lots of traffic up and down through here in narrow parts.
The ascent to the summit was a bit silly. There is so much loose gravel and scree, and no trail maintenance (as far as i can tell?) that people create 20 trails with losts of erosion. Its windy so that doesn't help - however, people could still stick to walked routes instead of making it worse. Guys were running and sliding down with GoPro's. A bit disappointing - coming from Colorado. Views from summit nice as stated -
You can walk to West Baldy for another 0.5mile there.
Took the Bowl Hut path down. This is a bit of a mess. Not a single trail marker at along on this trail. Except one "2" in a post. Again, lots of man made random trails with people trying to figure out how to get down w/o twisting an ankle. Its too bad Parks service can't make switchbacks here to eliminate all of the erosion and guide people better. There were a lot of people unsteady on their feet - not a trail to hike if this is you. Plan to slide around even if trekking poles. After the ski hut, the trail is carved, and easy to follow back down to the Jeep Road. Great views but not thrilled compared to 14'ers in CO. Prefer San Jacinto. 2:55 3.2 miles up, 3 miles and about 3 hrs down. I got lost among Boulders at one point and couldn't find the trail right before finding the ski hut.

Regina Hammond reviewed Blue Sky Reserve to Mt. Woodson to Iron Mt Out and Back

THis was from Blue Sky Preserve to Mt Woodson via Lake Poway. BS is less than a mile down Espola Road before you turn into the Lake Poway Road (coming from S 1-15). Its the left turn before Lake Poway and its free! Lake Poway costs $5 for non residents on weekends.

The walk down is under Oak Trees (after you park in Blue Sky Lot) along the Creekside Trail.
Then 1 mile turn Right - sign is very clear to head to Lake Poway.
The next mile is up with decent incline and switchbacks. Today it was around 98'F - in the sun direct and VERY HOT.
I finished 2 Qts of water + electrolytes.
Shortly after you are looking down on Lake Poway and follow the trail to merge with the Lake Poway trail to Mt Woodson summit. All trails are very clear.
Its 3 miles to summit from here.
There are very clear signs to bring at least 2 L / 70 oz water - and yet some people did not bring any!
Next climb is decent - wide roads but good climb.
I ran / walked the way up to the summit.
Best part is the last mile as you are past the elevation gain and have great views of Olivenhain Lake and Rancho Santa Fe and Lake Hodgess.

    The way down is runable.
I hit Lake Poway at dusk - 5:30 pm and i looked up when i heard scuffling in the chaparral and a coyote was watching me. So - take the Coyote warnings for real!

This trail was better than I expected; more runnable than Elfin - but still decent inclines to keep a modest effort.
