Nathan Marsh reviewed Judell Canyon Trail

This is a very beautiful trail in May with all the wildflowers. This canyon has the most wildflower diversity of any trail I have ever hiked. The views of the San Rafael Mountains from the Sierra Madres was also pretty fantastic. The trail was in decent shape, but it was in great need of some bushwacking at about the 2.5 mile mark, and the poison oak was very thick in areas with no option beyond having to push or bushwack through. The creek that flows down the Judell was stagnant in areas, but flowing in others; either way, it needed to be filtered until you get to the Sisquoc River at the bottom, which runs pretty clean. The trail, despite the need to bushwack, is pretty easy to follow, but does not see a lot of traffic.
The biggest disappointment, and the reason I took a star off of the review, is the locked gate that blocks access to the trailhead. The gate is locked 1.8 miles after you pass Dry Canyon Road, and adds 5.5 miles of hiking before you can even start the Judell trail. It is ridiculous to have this gate locked year round, and it turned a 9 mile hike into a 22 mile hike.

Nathan Marsh reviewed White Rock Canyon Trail

This was a neat little trail that is better done in moderate weather due to the lack of shade along the trail, but it is a quick hike. I would rate it as easy. I took the trail to the top to extend the length beyond the 2.7 miles, which made it more interesting. The best vistas are beyond the 4000ft mark along with the nicest trees. you get pretty good views of the Hurricane Deck, but the majority of the trails in the area do. There were some interesting rock formations, an abandoned mine, and a lot of healthy trees unaffected by bark beetles on the mountainside, which is a rare sight as of late. Note: there are a ton of deer ticks in the area, and we had to constantly check our dog. I highly recommend using tick repellent and treating your clothing with permethrin and then doing a full body inspection after your hike. On IG as @picbynathan

This is a good, scenic trail that has a lot of clean water from the Salmon Creek along the way. The trail and the camps are in good condition and mostly shaded along the way. The trail leads away from the coast, so you will not views of the coast like the Buckeye Trail, but it has a lot of beautiful backcountry views. Overall, it is a pretty easy hike that starts off pretty steep, but never has any really dramatic inclines after the first half mile. On Instagram @picbynathan

    Nathan Marsh reviewed McKinley Mountain

This trail is not that great for the first 8-10 miles, and will lack shade for long periods on hot days, so as the other reviewer said, it is best to start early. Your first source of water is going to be at McKinley Springs 8 miles from the Cachuma Saddle. Bring your water filter. The elevation gain is not too bad until you reach the McKinley Saddle. McKinley has very nice views, but I highly suggest turning left at McKinley Saddle and going to Mission Pine. I'm serious. You will pass San Rafael Mt., which is higher than Mckinley, but you get into the real gold at Mission Pine and beyond. This is going to make it a 30+ mile hike round trip, but it is so worth it!!! Mission Pine is easily the most beautiful place in the Los Padres that I have seen, and I have done a lot of trails. There are actually redwoods at MP, and I am serious. This Trail is best if you want to spend the night at Mission Pine or Pine Basin, but after Mission Pine the trail gets pretty sketchy.

Decent trail. We did the complete loop starting from the waterfall nearest the road, as I prefer starting the trail going uphill. There is a green little tower at the top and continue past . The trail back down will be on your left side. There is a cool swing near the bottom, but the flat at the bottom and back to the road is rather boring

I hiked this trail to Buckeye camp and back, and it was a beautiful trail. Four creeks were still flowing at the trickle level. The views of the coast are beautiful at the one mile point and there is plenty of beautiful mountain scenes. The trail is easy to follow but tricky in places, so watch your step. Also, most of the trail is uphill. Overall, very beautiful for the first 5 miles. I will be back to finish it to Villa camp Instagram @picbynathan

Nathan Marsh reviewed Pohono Trail: Glacier Point to Dewey Point

Absolutely amazing views! the forest is infested with dead or dying trees from bark beetles, but the views of Yosemite Valley from Dewey Point is phenomenal. Bring plenty of bug repellent. Trail is easy to follow despite being blocked many times by fallen trees.

Views are ok, very urban along the coast, which isn't very nice. Trail was a bit hard to find in places because everyone goes their own route. Graffiti in multiple spots.

This hike is actually a forestry route/ dirt road and not a trail per se (Zacha Mountain Road). It has a lot of beautiful views of the San Rafael mountain chain and of the Hurricane Deck. There is a gate at the bottom off of Figueroa Mountain Rd. If you are hiking, it is better if it is closed so you don't have to share the road with trucks. From here, there are some side trails that lead to Davy Brown camp. This is not a hard hike, but it is long. No need to worry about getting lost, as it is a road.

Beautiful little trail that is rather easy, but very scenic. It is a bit overgrown in places and the trail can be narrow, so trekking poles are handy. The Alamo Pintado creek at the bottom still has some water flow, but the area was covered with ladybugs.

There is a lot of nature on this trail. I always see deer, rabbits (which seem rare in other areas now), and plenty of birds and snakes. It is a flat and peaceful hike

There are a ton of short trails in this area. I hike here a couple times a week and it is a great place to get away for a few hours. Very dog friendly! This review is more for Orcutt Hills

This is a nice little trail off the 166. there is a lot off oak trees and high grass until you get up higher. At the top there is a nice grassy area to relax before heading farther into the los Padres

Beautiful views, rocks, and little streams after the rain. It can get crowded and muddy, but the trail is easy to follow
