Finally! I have wanted to do this for a long time and got it knocked out today. It is part of a goal to ascend or descend Leconte by the major trails I did it with a friend as part of a through trip down Alum. There are some great views along the way.

I really enjoyed this hike back when I did it. I wanted a hard hike and I was not disappointed. I started on the western half of the loop and agree that it is challenging. I chose it too because almost no one headed up that way and it made for a bit more solitude. However, I could not tell if the trail was overgrown because it used less or if it is more of a social trail. I hope it is not. Overall the view of the ocean, mountains and city are well worth the hike and effort. The eastern route is heavily traveled by hikers of all skill and variety. There is a pit toilet at the trail junction for the overlook a few miles into the hike.

Really enjoyed this trail. The section of the AT along the way has been improved greatly and is at times in excellent condition. There are several ascents and descents along the way reaching the destination. Multiple summits are achieved hiking along the trail and periodic entry and exit through dense Rhododendron and other brush and trees pay off with beautiful panoramic views. At times the terrain reminded me of hiking in Ireland.

I was on the way back from a job site last July and wanted to catch a good uphill hike. it was too late and too hot to do the longer 5+ mile route. The Rangers at the Cumberland Trail office suggested catching this trail up to the top. There is a pull off about halfway up Shelton Hollow Ln to park. Although the amount of trash suggests the locals like to party at the locale, the Rangers assured me that they had not had issues. The trail follows a nice creek the first bit and there is an abundance of trash (cans, wrappers, clothing :), etc..) but once you get past a couple of fire rings and the climb begins the trash diminishes rapidly. there are several really cool swimming holes/waterfalls along the way. The creek follows a unique vertical rock cut made for the adjacent interstate. Several locals were swimming on this day. The trail climbs steadily, eventually crosses the creek and then begins to switch back up to the top. It is a nice view of the surrounding area.

I had hoped to hike Grandfather Mountain this day but arrived too late to make a start. I searched AllTrails and came across this hike. It is a nice short and steep hike up to a rock overlook. From here Callaway Peak and Grandfather Mountain are visible. The hike follows the Tanawha Trail and it is a well worn path with some step ups and several sections of wood bridge built to span across the sensitive flora. I had decided to watch the sunset and was ahead of schedule so i ended following the trail past the summit down to a second parking area and then back up. The view of the sunset was awesome and made for a nice finish to the day.
