Raul Martynek reviewed Long Path Section 17

This trail is categorized as moderate but really should be difficult. The first 3.5 miles is straight uphill, with some steep rock climbs and areas that are pretty good pitch. Me and my two sons did it (18 and 11) so it was not extreme but definitely a good climb. There are two views at the top so best to go to the second one that has a great place for lunch and views of the Ashokan Reservoir in the background. We really enjoyed it.

Probably my favorite hike in the Catskill region. Starts off a bit crowded on the Minnewaska State Park side but by the time you climb the McCullock Mt., the people start to thin out. The walk on the ridge is awesome, with numerous rock cutouts with great views. The back side walk avoids a lot of up and down and has great internal views of the ridges. Some parts are pretty steep up and down so not for the faint of heart. Great time.

A very enjoyable hike. We decided to do the 2.8 mile walking path but the views of the lake are great and the path winds its way through the Timberland Forest through the park. A beautiful and crisp fall day, reminded me a bit of Fall in the Northeast. Definitely going to come back and do some of the other hikes.

My 11 year son and I went. The trailhead is basically non-existent and you have to walk between a patch of land at the back of houses. It then opens up a bit but the serpentine trails are not exactly well marked and close together so you end up on one side and another. Getting down to the lake is nice with good views. Got a bit lost on the way back but found our way out. It could use a bit of TLC with more markers and cleared out trails.

Went with my 15 and 10 year old. The ascent up is on a wide stone path with decent grade to get the blood pumping. Towards the top the abandoned hotel is fascinating for the kids and cool to walk through. Fire tower views are spectacular with Ashokan reservoir and Hudson River in the distance. We found a beautiful secluded ledge about 500 yards before the tower where we had a delightful lunch. Zipped back down in 45 minutes. Only complaint is that is not long enough!

A nice, fun relatively short hike. Easy to find, gradual climb which is not strenuous at all and then a nice waterfall and place to have lunch.

Hiked the trail this weekend with my three kids and a friend. We did the entire 8.6 mile loop and with lunch took 4.5 hours. The trail starts off long and gradual along a gully that crosses a few small streams. Once at the loop the trail climbs up and requires going up a few staircases that are pretty steep but short. The views from the top are decent but not expansive as there are trees that have grown to cover some of the scenery. We then decended by going down and around the top loop which meets back at the long trail down to the carpark. Very nice trail and some nice snow up top that was not at the bottom.

Did the hike this past weekend with my 10 year old son. The start of the hike is long and gradual, pretty easy. At the top there is a series of steeper switch backs, but not too tough. There is no view at the top but great views from the FireTower. We did not do the loop on the way down. Fun hike, with lunch took total of 3 hours.

Did this hike with my 10 year old son. The hike basically starts at the trail-head and goes over the mountain to a road on the other side. The trail-head is actually at the end of Coons Road. Don't go to the address on Red Hill Road as there is no parking. Use 60 Coons road for GPS directions.

The hike to the fire tower is 1.4 miles. Moderate for any active hiker, my son had no problem. The fire tower is very cool and the ranger gives a personal tour.

We then hiked past the fire tower and found an overlook with beautiful views and a nice flat rock to have lunch.

Hiked back to the car in 45 minutes. Fun trail, highly recommend it.

Good hike. Did it with my 9 year old in about 2 hours. Views are not great because of trees but a small lookout before the summit is actually best.
