Carlos Rull reviewed Diamond Head (Le'ahi) Summit Trail

I hiked this trail a couple of years ago and had a great time!

The family and I hiked Diamond Head in mid-August and I have to say this trail was super crowded, and all sorts of hikers from varying degrees of experience made the climb.

1.6 miles? It definitely felt longer than that. For one, the heat was "intense" the entire time, and there is not much shade, plus we didn't feel any wind until we reached the top.

I noticed a lot of tourists making the climb up in sandals and flip-flops (not a good idea). This is a real hiking trail and it's best to wear hiking shoes and maybe a good pair of trail running shoes.

It's steep pretty much all the way, and there are a few switchbacks here and there. You want to make sure you take a restroom break near the beginning of the trail, as there are no restrooms once on the trail.

There will be an area near the top where you have to ascend into what looks like an old bunker that was probably operational during World War II. Inside this bunker area it is HOT, and there is a spiraling staircase that is the bottleneck of the hike, as lots of people are hot and sweaty and trying to get through to the next area. It felt like a typical line waiting for a Disneyland ride at this point. You'll have to crawl a bit through an opening that emerges near the top. The spectacular views make it worth the entire trip.

I'd say this is a moderate to moderately-difficult hike. I don't know about the people who thought this was an easy hike because you are climbing up a pretty steep grade for most of the hike, but I guess if you are used to hiking/running up steep terrain and physically conditioned, then it should be a piece of cake and you could probably run up in 15-20 minutes, if there are no crowds!

All-in-all, this is a great hike on Oahu, and a must-do if it's your first time on Oahu, and I repeat the views are excellent!!! Just make sure you section out a good portion of the morning, and early enough so it doesn't get too hot and you're done before midday.
