Keith Perry reviewed St. Mary's Falls Trail

We hiked to the Falls last week and enjoyed the solitude. Very few hikers out. We did encounter a nice sized black bear on the trail. He was not aggressive but did not want to get off the trail either. He closed to 40' before our yelling encouraged him to go uphill and around us. I had my bear spray out and ready if he had come closer. The Falls are beautiful and this hike would be great hike in a few weeks when the leaves turn.
Always check your back trail as the bear was coming up behind us and making no noise!

We hiked to the Glacier last weekend and were lucky to have clear skies. The hike is a steady series of short level areas then uphill gains. A lot of sun exposed areas so extra water is a necessity. We saw a moose in Lake Josephine, a nice ram Mt. sheep and two grizzlies all on the hike.
It is well worth the long day. Leave early so you can spend more time at the glacial lake.

Beautiful fall weather today with clear sky's and temps at base in low70's. Trail is well maintained but steady elevation gains for first 2 3/4 miles. The last stretch is fairly even with great views of the valley. Lake area is brushy with only shore areas to picnic. Great workout hike!

This a great hike because it is available to so many people. Even with the incline the boardwalk and trail makes it possible for almost anyone to walk and enjoy the views. We saw 9 Mt. Goats last Friday. Along with ground squirrels and several plump marmonts. Great day in Glacier Nat'l Park

Nice short ( 2.75 one way) hike to great fishing lake. Nice canyon with waterfall. Otherwise very limited views due to forest .

Did Glacier Hike on sept 13th- my wife's birthday. Absolutely beautiful day. Temp was 32 degrees at 9am start.
The trail is a long slow incline. Pass through beautiful fields where we saw over 30 mountain sheep and 2 mountain goats. The lake was 2/3rds frozen over and snow 2-3 inches deep surrounded the lake. The lake is so awesome. The small glacier or mountain was making a lot of loud cracking, popping , and groaning noises.

Hiked this beautiful hike with family. Nice hike with elevation gains in the last mile. Very steady gains with long switchbacks.
The views of Flathead Valley were tremendous from the summit. We were easily able to see 50+ miles in every direction. Very windy on summit.

Went on this great hike today. From trailhead to Lake and back -6.5 miles
Lots of downed trees over the trail. Snow and ice at the Lake. Measured the snow to be just over 3' ft at the Lake area.

Great workout trail- defintely feeling it tonight! Otherwise trail is a gorgeous hike with unbelievable views of Flathead Valley.

We trained last spring in Austin to prepare for this great hike. This trail is only open about 100 days per year!
The trail is in good shape except for the initial
Portion of the lower trail which needs serious trimming. Be sure to bring bear spray as this is bear haven! The trail views are absolutely spectacular and can only be seen from a plane or on this hike.
Bring lots of water in late summer or bring water filter as we used both. We hiked in late august and while cool in the morning it got very warm in the afternoon sun and we went through about 40-50 ozs of water. You will encounter very friendly Mt goats on trail and two followed us for over a mile!
Best to acclimate to altitude before trying some of Glaciers hikes-- allow 3-4 days.
This is a serious hike but not technically hard. Just a long slow climb on day 1 crossing two Mt passes and crossing a snow field.
Plan ahead (by6-9 months) and stay at Sperry Chalet on the Mt. Well worth the cost for a great meal, entertainment by the staff and a comfortable bed!
The hike out is all downhill and enjoyable.
We did it at age 60 to celebrate!! We plan on going back and doing it again!
We took 8 1/2 hrs on day one and 4 hrs on day two and maintained a nice but enjoyable pace.

Beautiful winter day hike. No rattlesnakes to worry about in winter as these trails go through very rocky outcroppings. Trails could use some trimming and better trail signs, but still a very trail with some great views! Hiking boots may help some navigate the rocks and boulders better.
