Rachel Harmon reviewed Lower Crater Lakes via Rogers Pass Trail

I love that this one includes a little history with the beautiful scenery - we'd visited the West Portal of the Moffat Tunnel last year and had been curious about where the tunnel emerges on the east side, so we didn't need much of an excuse to do this hike.
This trail is not ideal for anyone seeking solitude; rarely was there no other group in sight, especially on the Rogers Pass trail before the turnoff to Crater Lakes (though plenty of people were also heading up to/down from Crater Lakes, often with backpacking and fishing gear). Thankfully, the trailhead parking lot holds a hundred or more cars, as it was at least half full when we arrived before 9 on a Sunday morning and even more so on our return.
I had not studied a topo map or elevation profile well enough before our hike to realize how sharply the grade increases around mile 2, when this trail starts snaking up towards the lakes. We felt every pound of the toddler that we were carrying, but the ability to dip our toes in the shallow water at the top was worth it. We didn't find the loop (but we didn't really look for it either); I suspect there's some bushwhacking involved. Fun day out - enjoy it!

This one is all about the views at the end, a worthwhile reward for (what feels like) a lot of up and down along the way. Know that you absolutely must scramble up the rocks at the top to get the full experience - we brought our toddler in a carrier and it wasn't an issue to climb up with an extra person to lend a supporting hand. I think I might have convinced my parents to make the move to Colorado after this one :) On a Monday morning, the trail was plenty empty - we only encountered two other groups along the way. Enjoy!

Rachel Harmon reviewed Idaho Springs Reservoir Via Chicago Lakes Trail

This was a nice enough hike (especially the cliffside bits of the first mile), but I suspect that the really beautiful stretches of the Chicago Lakes trail lie along the higher stretches past the reservoir. Half of this short trail is a wide dirt road, which can't help but to detract a little from the trail magic. We did find the trail looping around the reservoir, starting from the dam side, but it frequently petered out into thick undergrowth or boulder fields, so bushwhacking is definitely required.
Surprisingly, the trail wasn't particularly busy on a beautiful summer Saturday morning when we arrived just after 8:30 - maybe the expectation of afternoon storms was enough to turn away the masses?

Rachel Harmon reviewed Hagerman Tunnel Trail

What a cool hike! We had no idea that Hagerman Pass Rd would be such an adventure of its own (though we did see a Prius at the trailhead. so it's doable for at least some low-clearance vehicles). The trail was great fun, but there's still quite a bit of snow up there so expect lots of postholing, trail losing, and plenty of stream crossings (the sketchy-looking one with the very steep drop-off wasn't as bad as it looked). We made it an out-and-back to the tunnel and needed a solid 3 hours to do so. Have fun out there!

Rachel Harmon reviewed Lookout Point Trail and Centennial Trail Loop

I'm kicking myself for taking a wrong turn on this one (took the steep uphill at the stream with the Centennial Trail junction, to my chagrin), but I guess the upside is that we were able to see even more bison...and feel better about the fast food stop after the hike! Nice variation between the open meadows and the lower wooded areas along the stream; I imagine that would be especially appreciated on a hot day.

What a great trail system, and so accessible from downtown! We connected the Sand Dunes, Backbone, Lil Rattler, and Frontside trails and ended up hiking somewhere around 4 1/2 miles. Lots of mountain bikers out, but they were unfailingly courteous, and our counterclockwise loop must not be the most common route as most of them were heading in the opposite direction. Wish the trails were a bit wider, as they were busy, but the chance to gawk at the views made up for the inconvenience of constantly stepping off trail to let others pass. If you like this one, you'll probably also love the Whipple trail system in Buena Vista.

What a beautiful area! The abundance of trails and relatively gentle grade of the area made it easy to create a larger loop of our own (we ended up at ~8.5 miles), though many of the trails were muddy and the lingering snow patches meant that we twice lost the trail and bushwhacked until we ran into another one. The campground gate is closed for the season, so there are no entry fees to be paid but you will need to walk down the park road for about a half mile to get to the trailhead. Oh, and we saw a moose, which was icing on the already delicious cake!

This hike really is a great find for those days when you only have a few hours available, but that proximity to Denver does mean crowds, even in January. Thankfully, the dog owners seem to be fairly good about picking up after their pets and the mountain bikers, though numerous, were considerate. I didn't find the highway noise terribly noticeable, and it's really only about a quarter of the time that you're directly overlooking E470 anyway. So there are downsides to this one, but there are also plenty of beautiful overlooks, it loops, and it's a very easy drive from Denver. I'd recommend parking on the south end of the loop (if there are spots available) to end your hike downhill.
