Beautiful Well kept State Park. There was a $7 fee to enter the park. We parked at Massie Gap parking area. Used the Rhododendron Trail,The trail is in very good condition but lookout for the manure! Got to see several of the ponies..that made the trip worthwhile. The trail is listed as moderate but actually I thought that it was quite easy. I went on past where the Rhododendron trail ends to just beyond where the AT crosses. The area is quite beautiful would like to come back and do more exploring

You can make this hike long or short. We made it a short hike by driving to within 1/2 mile of the overlook. You can accomplish this by driving to the bus parking lot, and then follow the exit road to the sign for the trail. The trail is well maintained and quite pleasant but the big payoff is at the end when you get to the overlook platform. You are at over 6100 feet and on a clear day can see for miles! I really enjoyed this short little hike with the big payoff!

We hiked this nice moderate trail a few weekends ago. There are two ways that you can hike Carrick Creek Loop. We took the left trail towards Pinnacle Mountain and we were beside the creek right from the start...that way the nice scenery of the creek takes away from the incline! The trail was very well marked and very well maintained. We did notice an awful lot of the forest that was charred from the many fires in the area last year. I highly recommend this hike but would prefer hiking during the week in order to gain some solitude. Table Rock State Park is a real jewel for all to enjoy.

We entered Cat Gap Loop by crossing the big bridge just to the left and behind the building that houses the Wildlife Education and Fish Hatchery. After crossing the bridge you will turn right onto Cat Gap Loop(orange blaze) .In otherwise we hiked counter-clockwise. The first 2 miles of the trail is in excellent condition. It is mostly a steady uphill pull.. We took the bypass instead of the longer outer loop.At the end of the bypass (yellow blaze), you meet back up with Cat Gap Loop and you can turn left here to ascend up to John's Rock. We stayed straight ahead continuing on Cat Gap Loop. This is where the trail really deteriorates, it is straight down hill for about 1.7 miles! It is rocky, stumpy, and not easily hiked..use caution! You will meet up with the John Rock trail again and shortly it will pretty much flatten back out and the trail improves again. You will end up coming out beside the Davidson River and then the parking lot back at the Wildlife Education and Fish Hatchery Center. I am only giving this hike 3 stars because we did not go up to John's Rock. If we had hiked up to John's Rock I am sure we would rate it at least 4 stars maybe more. Our hike was a little over 4 miles and it took us 3 hours (including breaks)

This is a nice short hike, it would be great for beginners. Hopefully you will find a parking place on the Forest Service Road near the trailhead, if not then park at the Cove Creek Caney Bottom Trailhead and hike in the reverse order. The hike is a gradual incline out and therefore easier coming back. The hike takes about 1 hour. The Fall is a great time to hike so that you can experience the beautiful foilage.
