Priscilla Peraza reviewed Lost Coast Trail: Mattole to Black Sands Beach

This was my first backpacking trip and it was absolutely amazing! Just incredibly beautiful. If you love the beach, you get it. Did it comfortably in three days (Start 5/19 @ 10am - End 5/21 @ 3pm). 2 days is tough but doable. Bring tide charts because there are impassable sections. Would recommend buying the BLM map. Campsites are easily found and common at wide mouthed rivers even in the impassable sections! Plenty of water sources. There’s relative solitude during Spring/Summer. Permit is required! Would recommend going North to South, taking a shuttle Mattole and leaving your car at the Black Sands. Terrain is pretty roughy, either big rocks or sand so be prepared! Absolutely amazing trip!

Pretty long trail with a decent amount of elevation gain. Didn’t make it to the top so plan on taking a few hours to go out and back. Don’t go on a hot day, there’s not a whole lot of shade. Still very pretty.

Very easy, good for family/kids. There’s nice views of the mountains and just an all around beautiful place. Planning on returning in the spring.

If you're looking for more of a challenge than the normal route from the tram, this is for YOU! The elevation gain is insane but its well worth it. There is a prickly and brushy area that sweeps your legs so wear long hiking pants.

Take this way down. Safer but still be careful...just be smart.

I recommend this way up because of the lose rock. It can be dangerous coming down, so take Devil's backbone down instead. Theres also a restaurant at the end of Devil's backbone, so its a treat near the end.

Absolutely amazing. Try going later, closer to sunset.

Awesome hike. It's actually not too bad. Once you get to the Great Divide (road), you can go left up to the peak or right to the Holy Jim Trail. If you choose to go right, the Holy Jim trail is a little ways down to the left and kind of hidden (look for a pile of rocks). This way is a bit steeper but manageable. View on top is not 360 degrees so you kind of have to walk around, choose a view, and try to find a shady spot to take a break. Not to mention, there's thousands of nats and ladybugs bugging you. But overall, great views as you're going up and down.

Some steep hills but nothing too strenuous. It was actually really fun! This trail is actually comprised of several trails in the San Juan area. However, if you follow the track it will take you to the flagpole and you can see Dana Point Harbor and then Saddleback mountain in the other direction. Good hike for kids and dogs!

Warning! This trail is hard! Bouldering is required and the length is more around 8 miles! It took around 4 hours to complete. This trail gets tougher as you climb higher and becomes more dangerous. I would recommend long sleeves and pants. There is a lot of poison oak growing and it also helps against scrapes. I would actually also recommend gloves for the rock climbing portion. The falls at the end is so worth it though! Its a refreshing break and a nice pic opportunity. :)

It was fairly easy. There were a couple of super steep hill but for the most part manageable. You can get several nice views of the ocean but for the most part you're in the environment.

Tough uphill climb. I usually do this for training or a cardio workout! Not much of a trail but it gets your work-out in!

This hike is incredible! I will say there is a lot of people and it can be very touristy but what you can see is worth it! Lots of steps but it actually is not too long of a hike!

Would almost say this trail is more "easy" than "moderate" mainly because the incline is not too drastic. The length I can agree with can be lengthy. At one point you can see the lake which is pretty awesome. There aren't many views but it can be very scenic and great for birding!

Would not say its an "easy" trail. The incline is gradual and steady which makes it manageable but the length and amount of switchbacks can become cumbersome. I would anticipate it feeling longer than it actually is. However, the view at the top is pretty awesome! Be careful not to fall!

This was an amazing trail!. The incline was definitely manageable. Would say you could finish it in around 2 hours is a going at a nice and relaxed pace. There was pretty much a view at every turn which was great. Not to mention, the drive to get there is fairly nice as well.

There is a very steep initial climb to get to the top but after that, the trail is easy and mostly flat or mildly climbs. Though, the view at the top is fantastic! Would be pretty easy to bring a picnic lunch or dinner to the top.
