Frederich Devaney reviewed Charlies Bunion - Ice Water Spring Shelter

I've backpacked GSM three times. My new name for the range is the Great Soggy Mountains. I enjoyed the hikes nevertheless. The shelter system is not my thing. I don't want to share a hut with thirteen other people. On top of that, you can't spend (legally) more than one night there either. The rule leaves no time for exploring. Go down to the Nantahalas or Shining Rock instead. Don't get me wrong, it's a pretty place, but it's too structured for me.

Frederich Devaney reviewed Standing Indian Campground

My daughter and I stayed here last June. We stayed in the tent oriented upper Loop #5. 9/10 sites are shrouded with Rhododendron. We happened on the time they were in early bloom. Because of the elevation the hot summer temperatures are avoided. This not a private and secluded CG. It's fun though. Con: Because of the rains on the high forest canopy, it seems that it rains a lot of the time. This makes for wet firewood. It's close some nice waterfalls, Old-growth trees, hiking trails that could include the AT, kids swimming in the river, Standing Indian Mountain, and I had fun with my family, and saw the wilderness.

A geological gem, and a great place to duck out of the summer heat.

Frederich Devaney reviewed East Loop Trail

I've hiked this trail in whole or in part several times in the last ten years. The dune portion that runs from the park gate north to the RR crossing is the best part. It's the only reason this hike gets 3 stars. This section rollercoasters over the bushy dunes until it comes to a pine covered area just before th RR tracks. I the enjoy the hike to this area for lunch and some peace.
Geocachers are messing up the area with their absentminded and wandering destruction of the flora. While on the northernmost portion, I had a geocacher ask me which way was north. Near Scrub Jay CG, I saw another geocacher plowing through the Palmetto like a giant armadillo. I guess the park makes money from this activity.
Most of the last half, if travelling CC, is on sandy old roads - very sandy old roads. It's an excellent hike if you want to train for another hike or a run. If you decide to hike this trail, remember your sunscreen and come Dec-Mar, because easily 90% of it is exposed. The trail is good for wildlife sightings.

I have explored Jonathan Dickinson SP since 2002. This trail goes through typical Slash Pine/Palmetto scrub seen throughout this park and the surrounding area. You will not see anything on this trail you did not see on the trail going from parking lot to the overlook.

The trail is nice and typical of this part of Pennsylvanis woods, but the Forksville covered bridge made the trip special.

This is a 4 star trail if it wasn't so abused by careless folks. Sempervirens Falls is pretty, but is marred by the snack wrappers and water bottles people need to throw in the water.

Frederich Devaney reviewed Dipsea - Steep Ravine - Matt Davis Loop

This is an excellent hike because of its diversity. The Matt Davis trail starts in the beautiful golden grass typical of this gorgeous area of the world. The flora in the valley down to Stinson is welcomely shady, but has an ecosytem set apart from Redwoods on the return trip up Steep Ravine. I stopped for lunch on the patio at the Sand Dollar. You don't see that feature on a hike too much. The Dipsea portion of the trail had good views, but it was a hot trip. The negatives were the condition of the wood stairs on Matt Davis, and the neighborhood you had to walk through to find the trail at the end of it.

What a nice and pleasant find. The route depicted on the map is slightly different than the one I took. In my first 1/2 mile I came across the rarely seen Pacific Giant Salamander, and had a Banana Slug attached to a branch fall on my head. The terrain varied quite a bit. The lanscape in the shady valley is quite different from the sunny slopes and the ridge-tops. I thank Charlie at Duarte's in Pescadero for suggesting the place.

Baxter State Park is a wonderful place. I've never been to a better run park. The scenery is divine, and the facilities kick butt. I stayed in the bunkhouse and met some passionate and friendly folks. Chimney Pond is a place where I would love to stay all summer, and fall. One day I shall return.

Frederich Devaney reviewed Kelso Dunes Trail

When I lived in L.A. in the 90s the area between I-40 and I-15 was my favorite. Kelso Dunes, Cima Dome, and the Providence Mountains are excellent escapes from the smogy, crowded sprawl. I live south Florida now - I miss the desert.
