Patrick Bingham reviewed Loch Leven Lakes Trail

This was a good go, up to the three lakes. But, VERY rocky and rooted in sections. If you're looking for a decent hike to a couple of beautiful alpine lakes, consider the Azalea/Flora lake trail which TH just east of Boreal and behind the Donner summit rest area. MUCH better and shorter trail and the lakes are not as big, but very pretty and swimmable.

The Araby trail goes up to about 1300’ and then finds a sign “Burns/Gariston” trail. Nowhere is Araby loop trail referenced. At a weathered iron sign, labeled Burns Trail, it appears the trail Y’s and you can go left or right. At the cairn in that area, it appears the trail descends to the south in to a ravine, and then switchbacks can be seen going up a hill to the south. Point being, this trail fails correct marking. Not cool.

Well maintained trail. Very little loose rock-mostly sandy and some DG. Nice views to the south and west.

After my third time on this trail, it's unfortunately been consistently bad for dog crap on and next to the trails. Almost every group we saw going up had a dog, and I'm afraid ALOT of them do not do the courteous and correct thing and pick up after it. That was probably my last time taking anyone up there. Its downright embarrassing.

The road to the TH is closed so park on west side of 89 or on road. They ticket if you park on the east side. 1 mile walk west on road to TH.

This trail gets very steep in sections once above the shade. We turned around at the Madrone intersection, 1 mile up. Then 1 mile back to TH. AT recorded el gain as 660' in the 1 mile up. Good views of Mt Diablo up at the ridge.

Just did Round Lake trail, TH at Carr Lake off 17. I would strongly recommend this TH as opposed to going to Grouse Ridge, and working back westward. The Carr TH is MUCH easier to access, and will take you to the Penner/Crooked lake trail between Feeley and Island lakes. No prob getting to Carr lake TH on 17, though it is 4 miles of 5mph bouncing over rock and ruts. Doable however. Note that the trail map shows starting at the eastern end of the trail, at Grouse ridge. Just follow the driving instructions to end at the Carr Lake TH.

The lakes are in pristine condition. The view of Island Lake from the top of a granite outcrop is spectacular. CA 17 is a bit rough going the 4 miles or so after leaving 18, but its doable at 5mph or so. No huge ruts or boulders to negotiate. The rough road is worth the trip. There is also primitive campsites on Carr lake for a $15 fee.

The Far Side trail on the north facing side is still covered by up to 5-6' of snow. The Donner trail on the south facing side does go out 2 miles to the west where it meets the Far Side. Views along Donner trail are great, facing SSW to Castle Peak and mtns on the south side of I80

Wanted to do the loop between Timbercreek and Baker but at the top of Timbercreek,at the ridge, there is 8-10' of snow. Trail is covered and not discerned. We had to come back down same trail. Snow is still heavy above 9500'.

Very wet and mosquito heavy right now. I'd wait a coup0le of weeks to let it dry out.

See Natalie below. She is spot on. Only things I'd add is that there are a few spots on the trail that are "exposed" to thin air. I have moderate vertigo, and I was able to power thru those few spots, about 2/3 of the way down to the river. But, if you really have a mental issue with the looks of a trail that is next to nowhere, you might want to consider only going down past the waterfalls and then coming back. Also, it is possible to bypass the tricky waterfall crossing by following the biker trail that goes on the road to the right going down, and forks to the left coming up. Our hiking group from Reno is all over 60, and we completed the up and down in 5 hours including lunch at the river and rest stops. Its hot there right now and bring more water than you think you'll need. You'll be thankful you did.
