Awesome, very unique hike! If bringing kids or pets, it would be much advised to wait until the weather has been dry for at least a few days. We did it the day after a small rain storm, but after about a week of a swell. The river was extremely high! There were actual rapids, making the crossing fairly difficult for adults. My son, aged 3, had to be carried across and the water reached to my stomach and was very fast moving. It was absolutely worth it, though!
With the extra high waters, it was hard in two spots to find the path. The map had a hard time pinpointing my location, so it was a very loose guide.
    We LOVED it! Definitely recommend

I dared the rain with this one because it’s been on my list for a while now—it was incredibly muddy and slippery, but the views were stunning at every point! I happen to really enjoy challenging climbs, too. It’s a straight uphill climb that’s very clearly marked from previous hikers. However, I would recommend this only for the experienced or brave because it becomes exponentially harder with any sort of rainfall. There are strong root systems, rocks, and two sets of rope to help with the climb. The descent turns into more of a controlled mudslide, though.
Park at the fish pond just past the trailhead. There will be two entrances, but go into the one with a concrete bench and memorial. Be prepared to come out extremely dirty! The oceanfront makes it easy to wash off.

This is a nice, relatively short hike that is very doable for kids. I went with my 3 and 6 years olds, and there were only a few spots where I felt the need to hold their hands. About half way up, it turns into a gorgeous bamboo forest! The wind is usually strong, so the sounds can be a little intimidating, especially for younger kids. But they’ll get used to it quickly.
The last leg starts once you climb a steep portion with steps that leads to a paved service road. Follow it straight up the hill, then curve to the left after the two transmission buildings with graffiti. It’s a bit of a winding path up for less than 5 minutes, and there is a cool little stone section you can sit or stand on to get a gorgeous view of the surrounding peaks!
It has a very isolated and natural feel to it!

It is a moderately hard trail for inexperienced hikers, mainly because of the direct sunlight. It gets pretty hot.
Personally, I think there are MUCH better hikes in this immediate area that offer better views and a more enjoyable experience.
The fee is $1 for those walking in, but $5 per car wanting to park. The lot fills very quickly, so you should plan on having to park at the base of the State Park and walking up. It’s actually a pretty fun walk because of the tunnel thru the crater!
There are cold drinks, shaved ice, souvenirs, and restrooms at the start of the trail itself.
Kids can certainly hike this, but please be prepared with plenty of water and helping hands! It can get crowded and the rocks are not always steady. The sun can get pretty intense, so it may be better for the slightly older kids.
They do offer a one way trolley ride for $10, and it takes you back to the heart of Waikiki. It’s an open aired trolley—it’s a fun experience for any age!

The trailhead is to the left of the Pali Lookout. It’s a steep incline, but nothing too difficult considering the roots and trees that can be used for climbing. The wind is crazy! Be careful with your footing, and watch your hats and sunglasses!
Once you get across the first ridge line, it gets easier on your nerves! The hardest part, honestly, is the rock wall leading to the top lookout spot.
I’d suggest using a fanny pack instead of a backpack because my hiking partner’s kept getting stuck on branches and fallen trees.

Best hike yet! The wind was unbelievable, and t made a few areas kind of tricky. The initial hike up to the ridge is steep and muddy.
The ropes are in great condition, and they come in handy on the straight upwards rock wall climb.
We had a small issue with loose rocks that fell as we climbed back down the rock wall, and it made for a tricky descent because we didn’t want to hit each other in the head with one.
The payout is huge! HIGHLY recommend (but definitely not for kids because of the drop offs and difficulty with rain and wind)
