Neal H. reviewed Mount Morrison South Ridge Trail

Don't take this hike lightly. It's fairly steep and there's very little level terrain all the way to the top. The most difficult portion of the hike wasn't the brief scramble just before the summit, it was the descent back to the trailhead. Going up you won't notice the loose rocks and slick, sandy soil as much as you will coming down. Bring good shoes/boots with plenty of traction, and consider using trekking poles. Rattlesnakes are present in this area so be aware of them. There's almost no shade along the trail so plan accordingly if attempting this hike during the dead of summer. Wish I had something to say about the views, but it was foggy when we went so there wasn't much to see.

Nice, mostly-shaded hike from the parking lot up and around Spruce Mountain. Good views of the southern Rampart Range from the top. Pikes Peak and Almagre Mountain are partially visible from spots on the trail, as is a distant Mount Evans. Trail is easy enough that it doesn't really feel like 600' of vertical gain.

While everyone and their dogs are slogging through the canyon this trail is nearly empty. It's perfect if you're looking for solitude.

If this had been my first 14er, it probably would've also been my last. The trail is rated as a Class 1, but it's definitely not an easy hike by any means. Unless you're in really good cardio shape the 3450' of vertical gain (1100' of which comes in the last 2/3 of a mile) will test your fortitude. The view from the top is worth the pain. On a bluebird day you can see as far as Sangre de Cristos roughly 100 miles away.

Total roundtrip distance is actually 3.8 miles. Trail is in pretty good shape. Only a few small, avoidable snowfields between 12,900' and the summit of Sniktau. Most folks either bail before the connecting ridge or head right toward Cupid. Had the summit to ourselves for all but a few minutes today.

Moderately strenuous hike due to overall length and vertical gain. The number of switchbacks can be demoralizing. Great primer for gauging alpine hike readiness. Views are often obstructed by forest (primarily lodgepole pine & occasional aspen). Summit sign is located off the end of the trail near the transmission tower. Trail has a decent amount of mountain bike traffic between Too Long and Meadow View Trails.

Took a friend and his son to the lookout for their first exposure to hiking in Colorado. Take care heading up Rampart Range Road in low-clearance vehicles. The road is moderately washboarded and there are a few spots with large potholes that will have to be evaded.

We arrived at the trailhead around 8:15am and there were only 2-3 other cars there. The trip up the trail was easier than my first attempt a couple years ago and the trail was in good shape and free of snow the whole way up. Had to dodge scat on the trail from mules that were used to bring shingles up for a roofing project at Ranger Bill's cabin. Spent about a half hour at the tower snapping pictures and enjoying the vista. The morning was so crisp and clear that the Sangre de Cristos were visible to the southwest. On our way down we encountered throngs of people coming up and when we got back to the car around 11am the parking lot was overflowing with people.

Hiked the entire length of the trail system. Plenty of ice on the eastern and lower western sides of the park. Trails were in good shape otherwise. Hike is easy enough for kids and adults alike.
