Great hike! Quick but challenging, marked only by ties on trees right now but the trail is easy to follow. Hats off to the trail planners... the trail really showcases this beautiful forest. The trail winds around the mountain so that you come out of the woods to the summit on open rock . A bit of scrambling here or there but definitely doable by just about anyone. Took me 55 minutes to get up and 35 to get. down. Really a fun hike. There’s a small stream for the first part of the hike but no water towards the top of you are hiking with a dog. Highly recommend!

Nothing more to add to recent reviews. For less crowds try a weekday or early weekend morning. The new porta potty is fancy! This would be an ideal sunset hike.

Nannette Reepmeyer reviewed Phelps Mountain Trail

Hiked in to Phelps from the Loj. I really don’t see any reason to do this mountain unless you are a trying to get all 46 High Peaks. Took 2.5 hours from the Loj and less than 2 to get back. The hike in is a lovely walk, but the trail up Phelps is a bit boring and pretty difficult, lots of roots and stones ......no views till the very end. I agree with another reviewer.... it IS a unique view of Marcy and the other high peaks in the area once you are on the summit. Of course I had a great time, I was hiking! But I would not climb this mountain again.

Nannette Reepmeyer reviewed Cat and Thomas Mountain Trail

A great hike- we went up Cat on the blue trail first, then took the yellow trail to Thomas and back down. Blue trail up to Cat is easy to follow and well marked. The yellow trail to Thomas was also well marked but was relatively ‘rough’ meaning lots of ups and downs, lots of roots and mild bouldering. Def a challenge for a beginner... but well worth it! Lots of fabulous views. When I go again I will go up the yellow trail and down the blue, I like the rough stuff while I’m still fresh!
Highly recommend this hike- you can just do the blue trail for a quick up and back or do the loop for a great workout.
