    Mark Soden

    Winchester, Massachusetts

I just returned from South America where a few hikes in the Andes re-charged my love of hiking. When I was in my teens I hiked and paddled in the ADKs a lot, sometimes with my father and other trips with Camp Dudley. After that time, got busy with other things, but now that I have a son of my own I want to get into both paddling and hiking again. 46er? Probably not in my future, but maybe so.

Great walk. Paved path is as easy as it gets. Good for kids learning to ride their bikes, strollers, and also wheelchair accessible. Pond wildlife like ducks, geese, and fish when the pond is stocked twice a year. Sailing lessons and canoe/ rowboats for rent make the pond a local destination for frequent and varied uses. Exercize stations throughout make it a go to for JP residents. There is a historic element addressed by signage and representative building foundation on a hill north of the pond. Nice, however often busy, family walk.

Just got back from the hike up to the observation tower with my wife and 2.5 year old. Difficulty was just about perfect for him. He had a great time learning to negotiate the boulders and then right about the time he got tired and was heading toward meltdown, we arrived at the tower! Completing the loop down was much easier and had less small rocks. I'd recommend it for families who are willing to spend 2+ hours on a relatively short hike. The view at the top makes for a nice reward.
