Mike McGrath reviewed Lone Tree via Peralta Canyon Trail

This is a beautiful and fun hike the entire way. We kept stopping to take in the views, but nothing prepared us for the view of Weaver's needle from Fremont saddle, which truly is awe-inspiring. The pictures don't even come close to the actual experience. The additional hike from the saddle to the Lone Tree is fun and absolutely worth it. The first and last half mile are easy, while the middle part is moderately strenuous if you maintain a good pace. Did this in early December so the temperatures were great. There was a surprising number of flowers along the way for December. Most of the trail was pretty rocky so be careful!

Absolutely beautiful trail. So much green, so close to Phoenix, and about 20° cooler. The creek is gorgeous and refreshing. The trail runs right next to the creek most of the way. The trail is very easy, very wide, and mostly flat except for a few uphills as you get further in. The waterfall is small but pretty and a good place to relax. Past the waterfall is a more challenging trail that climbs right up the mountain to Promontory Butte, which offers an amazing scenic lookout. I've been to Horton Creek 3 times and enjoyed each time.

Fun little hike. 2.2 miles round trip, took about 40 minutes each way at a moderate pace with stops for pictures. Moderate to strenuous. Pretty consistent incline the whole way, no scrambling or climbing. The first quarter mile is a paved road, then it becomes a narrow rocky trail. Similar in effort to Piestewa Peak, easier than Camelback, but far fewer people. Saw 15 people total on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Could hear a live band playing at a bar in Cave Creek all the way to the summit, which was fun. Gorgeous views the entire hike, especially at the summit, where you can see at least 40 miles in every direction. The American flag dedication at the summit is perfect. I really enjoyed this hike. It's a great destination just outside of the city if you only have a couple hours.

Beautiful hike. The trees are densely packed until the saddle at 3.8 miles. The trail is wider than average, easy to follow, and not particularly steep, with a lot of exposed roots and some rock clusters. Views from the saddle and the summit are incredible. Altitude sickness is a real possibility here, so it's important to stay hydrated. Plan for the temperature at the summit to be 20 to 30 degrees colder than at the trailhead. It was a clear, sunny day, but the wind was brutal beyond the saddle, 50+ mph. The last mile from the saddle to the summit can be a lot trickier depending on the weather, but is definitely worthwhile.

Mike McGrath reviewed Kendrick Mountain Southside Trail (CLOSED)

Cool hike with interesting and beautiful views. Gradual but consistent incline the entire way with many switchbacks. The trail is very well maintained. I loved the smell of the mountain air, very refreshing. There were many areas where the trees and plants are burned from the recent Boundary fire as well as past fires, but new plants and wildflowers have grown and bloomed since then, so it is recovering. The upper 1/3 of the trail appears to have been minimally affected by the fires. Was interesting to see the 100 year old cabin near the top. Views from the summit are amazing - can see the Grand Canyon, many other mountains and hills. Hundreds of birds over the course of the trail. There was nobody in the lookout tower on a Sunday afternoon so we couldn't enter. Only saw 7 other people over the entire hike. It was 4.42 miles from the trailhead to the summit, 8.85 miles round trip, according to my GPS.

Mike McGrath reviewed Sunset Trail to Brookbank Trail Loop

Absolutely beautiful loop. Dense trees, many birds and wildflowers. The pond at the halfway point is nice. Some inclines, mild-moderate overall. Great views of the San Francisco Peaks and the surrounding area. Many mountain bikers on the trail. I recommend knowing where you are going beforehand because this loop intersects with many other trails and we ran into a number of people who were lost and didn't know which trail they were on.

Mike McGrath reviewed Abineau Trail to Bear Jaw Trail

Fun trail. A moderate 2.5 mile incline on the Abineau Trail, then a 2 mile flat walk along the top of the canyon, then a 2.5 mile descent on the Bear Jaw Trail. Very rocky on the ascent and descent. Great views from the top. A lot of downed trees on the Abineau side. The Bear Jaw side was much prettier, with a lot more green and more wildflowers.

Good workout. Great views from the top, especially at sunrise and sunset. Often very crowded, can be challenging to get around groups of people when the trail is narrow.

Mike McGrath reviewed Bill Williams Mountain Trail

Absolutely gorgeous. Lush green forest the entire way, which improved after mile marker 1 and even more after mile marker 2, becoming more dense and beautiful. Apparently early fall is the best time to go. Stunning views from the top, even better from the lookout tower. Numerous butterflies and lizards, patchy wildflowers. Weather was perfect. Mild-moderate difficulty, with 5-15% grades interspersed with frequent leveling off. Exceptionally well-maintained trail, with numerous trail markers. The town of Williams is a great place to go after, with some really good restaurants and bars.
