Mike Hulburt reviewed Mummy Spring Trail

If you’re camping at Hilltop, this is great trail that is around the corner from the campsite. I was in the zone and ended up going a little past the Springs because there is no water in June so easy to miss. The switchbacks provide the most difficult incline, and then it levels off with about 3/4 mile left.

All incline and a great quick workout for the legs and glutes. Very well-maintained and clear trail to the top. About 1.2 miles up there is a nice breezeway. Plenty of shaded areas to stop if you need a break. Once you reach the peak, you can continue another half mile to Cave Springs or another 6 miles to Charleston Peak. You can also head back down to the North Loop Trailhead which is 4 miles.

If you’re hiking along the gravel wash, you are not on the actual trail (I realized that about 1 mile in.) Once you get to the north side of the mountain, I recommend veering right to go up and over. It adds some nice elevation and leg burn. Be prepared to scramble back down on the east side.

Easy kid-friendly hike right off SR 157. If you’re short on time and just want to escape the Valley heat for a couple hours, book this one. No real spectacular views along the way but always nice to smell the pine trees and listen to the wind speak through them.

Started from the Cowboy Trail Rides side. Nice leg burn up through Caren Canyon to Muffin Ridge. Great views of the Strip for about a half mile along the ridge to the BDH peak. The descent down leads to multiple trails that connect to Boneshaker and ultimately back down through Fossil Ridge to the parking lot.

Nice well pathed trail up to one of the Black Mountain peaks. Easily accessible to the top in one hour for the experienced hiker. Short switchbacks with cool rock formations make it interesting to ascend with excellent views of both the Strip and Lake Mead at the peak.

The north side of the loop is fairly easy and mostly gravel. There are many shaded areas in the canyon with cool rock formations along the way. You’ll hit the Colorado River at about 3 miles on the way to the Hot Spring. If you continue to follow the loop around on the south side, that is a good leg workout where the majority of elevation gain but very little shade.

Took a wrong turn at Albuquerque so decided to go ahead and follow Boneshaker around to Muffin Ridge and then back down Caren Canyon. Excellent view of the Strip at the top and plenty of boulders to sit on and enjoy. If you have Sprint, there is no service along this trail until you reach the top. I’ll be bringing my iPod next time for tunes
