Stunning view all along the hike up to the ranger lookout station. Wildflowers abound and longhorn sheep can be seen along the trail near the top. Pesky chipmunks are always there ready to lighten your load by a few scraps. Once you reach the top, you'll have a panoramic view of the whole park. IMO, this trail should be rated 'moderate' not 'hard'.

Mike Higgins reviewed South Rim to Ribbon Lake Loop Trail

Walked this trail along the south rim and had stunningly beautiful views. Before reaching Point Sublime, we turned into the forest to Ribbon Lake. You walk past Liliy Pad lake on the way around Ribbon Lake. We came back on the ClearLake-Ribbon Lake Loop trail. This takes you back thru the forest and into a beautiful open meadow. We were greeted by the local elk casually grazing away about 30 yds from us, but wasn't very interested in what we were doing. Some local bison are in the same area near Clear Lake. They also acknowledged us, but weren't interested in anything but eating. There was a nice breeze and the fragrance of the purple lupines filled the air. We needed to turn north on the Clear Lake-Ribbon Lake loop trail but was blocked by a small bison herd that claimed that area for eating and lounging in the dirt. Not being bold enough to try and shoo them away, we decided to detour to the parking lot near the South Rim trailhead and walked back to our car along the road to the parking lot at the end of the South Rim Drive. This was just a beautiful day hike that most people could do. Just remember your insect repellant because the mosquitos were out in force this time of year.

Sections closed due to construction. I would wait until it reopens.

Ordinarily, this is one of my favorite hikes. I have rated this a 5-star in the past. However, I'm very disappointed with the maintenance and conditions of the Boucher trail. The trail is now severely over grown and difficult to hike. The brush completely covers the trail in many spots. You have to crawl on you hands and knees to get thru many different spots. In some areas on the N side of the mountain the trail is actually giving way to erosion. The park is also flush with poison oak. This makes hiking on your hands and knees especially difficult.
This trail is in severe need of maintenance.

Absolutely love this hike. Very nice variety of stunning scenery. We usually see deer and wild turkeys running around in addition to all the other smaller forest creatures. A mid-day picnic at Doane's Pond is a nice treat. The ducklings just recently hatched and swimming about with their moms. Be cautious because huge beds of poison oak has blossomed and we usually get a little exposure, but not enough to spoil the day.

Not to difficult. It has a beautiful little forest of Calif Oaks near the trailhead with a cute stream flowing though it.
