I've lived in this area, and been a regular visitor, for 25 years. This walk took me to parts of the forest that I'd never visited before and taught me a few things I didn't know about the forest. I didn't find the wooden post with red arrows and the fenced ancient lane - I'll just have to do the walk again and have another look!

Work has started on the car park at the point that this walk joins Wood Lane. It looks like a short section of path parallel to Forest Road and a short section of Wood Lane will be closed on days that they are working on the car park (until the end of August 2018). If the paths are closed when you do this walk, then follow Forest Road up hill to the junction with Terrace Road (roundabout). Turn left and follow Terrace Road South past Newbold College to the junction with Popeswood Road. Turn left along Popeswood Road passing the wood mentioned in the walk text. At the big roundabout cross Temple Way and then follow it a brief distance downhill to resume the walk opposite the end of Wood Lane. This diversion will add less than a mile to your walk and will give you several opportunities to get refreshments in Binfield.

Great place (the café is definitely worth a visit) and a good walk. Unfortunately I was there in the rain which meant I couldn't see the views, but other than a few bikers I had the place to myself. Don't be lulled by all the forest tracks, save some energy for the last mile or so, which has some vicious ups and downs. Also, watch out for the bird-life in the last mile, there's a lot more birds in the old woodland.

Lovely walk. Although we know this area, we had never walked this section of the ridge path before.

Nice walk. It's not a problem, but the route on the map does not quite correspond to the route on the ground around the section of canal that is being restored. Angler's Retreat at the start / finish does good food and beer.

Great walk and lots of lovely spring wildlife. Frost Folly will be the entry point to a new country park (a SANG - suitable alternative natural greenspace), and the new ponds are already attracting swallows, and dragonflies (chasers). There is also a nice café (Robyn's nest) in the garden centre near the start / finish. Where the route crosses a main road by the Shepherd's House pub, the garden centre is 100m to the right (west).

The oak tree referred to in the introduction was actually an elm, known as the Centre Elm, which was probably an early victim of Dutch Elm Disease. The remnants were inexplicably removed in 2003. There are various local stories about people hiding inside the elm to escape the law or rob passers-by.
