Michelle Tiedeman reviewed Cape Lookout Trail

I would call this hike moderate because of the tree roots and the portions that were right along the cliff side (no guardrails!) We did not take our dog, even though they are allowed, because he doesn't do well with other dogs and we didn't want to have any encounters along the cliff portions. I'm glad we made this decision! Beautiful vista at the end. We watched for whales for about 20 minutes and did not spot any, although we spotted some right off the coast from the nearby Pelican Brewery in Pacific City after the hike.

Great workout. Lots of mud today, and felt the views were more stunning from the lower vista. We saw a herd of elk in the distance.

Such a beautiful hike! It's hard to believe so many gorgeous waterfalls are on one trail. We started at the North Lot and hiked counter clockwise. It was a very busy day (as usual) and this put us against the flow of traffic, which I'm happy about because there were several large groups on the trail. We completed the hike in about 3-1/2 hours, which included stopping for lunch at the cafe.

Amazing variety of ecosystems. The hike to the point was scary and exhilarating. We did the loop starting at one end of the neighborhood and finishing at the other. Account for another mile and a half or so for walking through the neighborhood to the parking lot at Roads End.

My legs were still recovering from the Waipi'o Valley hike a few days before, so given the heat and uneven terrain, I did not find this hike to be very enjoyable. We got there as the tide was coming in, so we weren't able to spend a lot of time on the beach. The surf was crazy! We actually ended up wimping out and taking the shuttle service back down - which I found to be like being on an amusement park ride, standing up, and without being strapped in. The beach was breathtaking, so I'm glad we did it.

You will remember this hike for days - as in the aches and pains in your legs! It was beautiful though. We arrived as the tide was rising so we chose not to navigate the large rocks on the beach. It's definitely a fascinating experience.

Michelle Tiedeman reviewed Kilauea Iki Trail and Crater Rim Trail

This trail surpassed by expectations, traveling through lush rain forest and across the crater floor, which I at first thought would not be that exciting. But it was fascinating to see the cracked earth up close, and the new plants that are coming in. Bonus - we were there the morning of May 4, right before the big earthquakes struck, so we got to experience it before the park closed.

Today was blustery. The conditions at the parking lot mirrored that of The Loch, which meant that we spent very little time at the destination. We made a decision at the Glacier Gorge parking lot that we would not take our snowshoes based on the snow conditions we saw, which was a good decision until we reached the trail split to go to Loch Vale. From that point on, the snow began to drift, and those without snowshoes found themselves post-holing to the top. To be honest, this is the first time I've done this trail and I have no idea if it was even the correct route (basically climbing up a waterfall, but we were following the tracks from previous hikers). This area was actually the highlight of the hike from a scenery perspective, but definitely considered turning around multiple times. My advice is to be prepared with a minimum of microspikes, poles and extra gloves to ensure a comfortable descent. I'm eager to try this trail again under more moderate weather conditions.

We were looking for an easy hike where we could enjoy the fall colors and as a diversion during our drive along Guanella Pass. We were shooting to make it to the ridge, and I believe we did, but we didn't really know it because there wasn't any sort of vista. It was a good hike for what we were looking for today.

Michelle Tiedeman reviewed St. Mary and Virginia Falls Trail

This was a great hike, but I'm still not sure if I made it to Virginia Falls. I think we were at the top of it (the water flow is much less than earlier in the season, I'm guessing), but I don't recall seeing a spot to view the falls from below. The unnamed falls in between doesn't clear up any confusion. But it was spectacular regardless.

We took the first boat ride which was supposed to be a ranger led hike, but that portion ended up being cancelled due to the smoke. I was nervous about running into a grizzly, but there was enough safety in numbers on the way up that it wasn't a problem (plus, we didn't end up seeing any grizzlies after all). We saw lots of big horn sheep, even right along the trail, as well as a ptarmigan. Another couple that we ran into on the trail said they spotted something that sounds like a Canadian lynx about 20 yards from where we were, but we didn't actually see it. The smoke was challenging and obstructed the view of the lake that is usually visible from the trail. Despite the challenges, this was a tough but rewarding hike!

We did this hike Monday of Labor Day weekend. Given that the boat was full, we expected to have a bit more safety in numbers walking through black bear habitat, but there was only one other solo hiker, and a slower group. We had to commit to a time for our boat return given the busy weekend, so we opted for the earlier departure, which ended up giving us a little less than an hour at the lake (plus one hour to hike each way). The hike through the forest was stressful because there were only two of us, and the foliage was thick, but luckily we didn't see any bears. Once at the lake, only the upper portion of the main lake is visible - the southeast side of the lake is covered in willows. We did see one moose and were surprised by how tiny it looked across the lake, given that the lake is not very large.

We hiked this on Sunday, Labor Day weekend, and the trail was very crowded given the holiday and that many of the trails in the park are closed due to wildfires. It was a pretty hike with unusual falls.
