Michelle Barlow reviewed Top of the Y

Did this with the kids (15,12,10,8) today. Yes, it’s steep the whole way, but I’m not sure why so many reviewers say it isn’t pretty. We went early in the morning and had shade on most of the trail. The mountains and valley view (yes, there is only one view the whole way) are beautiful. Plus, it’s great to have a destination for the kids to reach, one that they can see from the freeway and say, “Wow! That Y is high up the mountain...and I hiked to it!” P.S. If you need to, you can bribe them with a trip to The Creamery if they keep a positive attitude while hiking! We all enjoyed this hike, but I probably had the most fun since I could relive my college days at BYU with my kids.

Michelle Barlow reviewed Timpanogos Cave Trail

We’ve hiked this trail before, and every time they have made beautiful improvements to this trail making it safer and more beautiful. My daughter (12) was feeling sick, but we decided to go for it anyway since my sister and the 7 other kids were so looking forward to it. The other kids (15,14,12,11,10,8,7) had no trouble scampering up this steep, paved trail. But because my daughter wasn’t feeling well, it took us a LONG time to get up to the cave. A whole school field trip got in front of us, so instead of the 9:45am tour, we had to go on the 11:30am tour. There was a wonderful ranger EMT that checked my daughter out, just one of many incredible rangers. The woman who lead our tour was incredible! The kids can still name the ingredients it takes to form a cave. The cave is incredible. So beautiful and interesting. This is a steep, tough hike not to be underestimated, but the cave makes for a great payoff!

This was such a pretty hike this time of year—wild flowers, green hills, waves of grass blowing in the breeze, and THE VIEWS! So awesome to see Antelope Island, down into City Creek Canyon, across the majestic Wasatch Mountains, clear across the Salt Lake Valley to the Kennecott Copper Mine, and over Downtown SLC. The kids (15,12,10,8) did great and it seemed like a popular dog walking location. This was our 70th hike in one year—6/1/2017-6/1/2018. That’s 70 different, kid-friendly hikes! So love living along the Wasatch Front!

Wow! What a gorgeous hike! Yes, the first 0.7 miles are pretty steep, but you’re walking through a gorgeous canopy of trees. Once it levels out, the views are incredible! This was our first time hiking in Millcreek Canyon, and it didn’t disappoint! I can imagine this one being incredible for watching the sunset. The whole family (kids 15, 12, 10, 8) all loved it, though it was challenging for my middle two with special needs...but in a good way.

Michelle Barlow reviewed Nobletts Creek Trail

Beautiful trail! Nobletts Creek is really running high with all the run-off. A couple sections were a little washed out, but we crossed them without getting our feet wet because of the plentiful logs and boulders. The mossy creek is so beautiful! I would have given this hike 5 stars, but the forest service has cut down a bunch of trees and left them along the trail. I know the cut logs will decompose and it’s good to remove trees for safety reasons, but seeing cut logs everywhere detracted from the beauty. But 4 stars is still really good, and the kids (15,12,9) has a great time.

We started the trail where it crosses over the road from the west side to the east side (there is a small bathroom and sign saying “Mormon Pioneer Trail”). Gorgeous trail! How is it possible that being a descendant of Mormon pioneers I have never been on this trail? Loved the beauty and history in every step. We hiked to Little Dell Reservoir which was the most gorgeous teal blue today. Great for the whole family. Maybe 3.5 miles round trip.

Nice place for a walk along a paved trail on a spring afternoon. It was nice to have a series of steps to tackle. Pretty views of Mt. Olympus and the Salt Lake Valley.

So we did this one 4/9 on a perfect Spring evening. The trail was nice and dry, had good views, winds through trees, passes over Strong Creek, and has some fun parks at the end (though the park is at the beginning if you follow the AllTrails directions). We started at the 29th Street trailhead and hiked to the park. Then my teenage girls watched my boys play there as I completed the loop back up to the trailhead to grab the van. It wouldn’t have been hard for the kids to walk up to the trailhead, but it is always nice to have a fun destination when hiking with kids. Also, its actual name is Gib’s Loop if you’re wanting to look it up on other sites.

Such a spectacular arch from such a short little hike. It was shady and perfect in the 5pm light. Kids loved it and we snagged an amazing family photo with hardly anyone else in the shot. How did that happen on such a crowded day at Arches National Park? We must be living right ;)

Fun, short, and gorgeous loop around this natural wonder!

Why have I never done this one before?! It’s cool (in temperature and aesthetic) and sandy in between these amazing rock formations. My boys kicked off their shoes and enjoyed the feeling of sand on their feet. Great place to rest while the kids play. Awesome hidden arch!

Gorgeous views from this trail to one of the longest arches in the world. The footing is very easy except for a little section right before the arch, but most people should be able to handle it easily. See it before it falls! Tunnel Arch and Pine Tree Arch are easy side trails to some cool natural wonders. Gotta do those while you’re at it! This would have been a 5, but the crowds are crazy!

Michelle Barlow reviewed Corona and Bowtie Arch Trail

Wow! What a gorgeous trail to some spectacular arches! The whole family enjoyed it so much. Though some have mentioned it being easy for kids, I think it is rated moderate for good reason. My 11 and 9 year old with special needs found going DOWN the ladder and roped area pretty difficult. We saw quite a few families with several little ones manage it, but it is helpful to have more adult hands to get everyone up and down safely. Lounging under the shadow of Corona was incredible! There are picnic areas next to the Colorado River just up and across from the trailhead parking. Great place to eat lunch after a rewarding hike!

Michelle Barlow reviewed Ensign Ridge Trail

So we’ve always wondered about the path that forks to the right at the top of the hill instead of heading left to the Ensign Peak monument. So we took it today. We only went as far as the top of the next big hill, and it was really worth the view. Hard enough to challenge the kids (15, 11, 9, 8), but doable on this cold, windy Spring morning. So proud of my kids!

Wow! The views on this trail are 5 Star views. The slippery snow on the trail and the few spots of mud made this hike SUPER hard for my 9 and 11 year old with special needs. And the effort I had to put in to ensure they didn’t fall made this one of the longest 1.7 miles of my life. My 15 year old flew over the same footing. But even with the slipping and sliding, we loved this hike. So beautiful! I can only imagine how pretty it would be at other times of the year.

We really enjoyed Quail Trail today. A good part of the trail was still in snow with a few muddy sections and a good portion nice and dry packed dirt. With temps in the 60’s this week, I bet this trail is going to get pretty muddy in the next little while. While one of the trail signs pointed down, we took the left path that lead up since it looked less muddy. Gorgeous views! Kids (11, 9) loved it!

We actually had a really fun time walking this urban trail. Yes, we threw snowballs at each other along the way—and it was almost 60 degrees outside! Once out of the businesses, the trail continues to follow the creek through a quiet residential area to this cool, old stone mill. The kids loved the place, and it’s always good to have an actual arrival point with kids. Fun 2 miles on a pretty Springlike day!

Michelle Barlow reviewed Killyons Canyon Left Fork

Since there is no parking at the trailhead, I dropped the kids (15, 11, 9, 7) off there and let them get a head start. I parked about 3/4 of a mile away and hoofed it up there and met them up the trail a little ways. The trail had nicely packed snow and we were fine in our hiking shoes and snow boots. I love the contrast of white snow with the red bark twigs. This little hike followed a pretty creek and had some easy ups and downs. We stopped at the stone marker for Killyon’s Canyon since the trail beyond was really muddy. Great little hike!

The sunshine was bright and warm, the snow-covered trail was well-packed and crunchy (no snowshoes necessary), and the views were gorgeous. We hiked to the picnic area and enjoyed a little afternoon snack. Easy hike for the kids to a pretty snow-covered lake along a lovely little creek.

The trail was too muddy to hike today. I almost face planted scoping it out to see if it was doable for the kids. We’re going to try it again later in the year because it looked pretty nice. The trail head says Bad Apple and Flying Dog.

This was a gentle hike on good packed snow or gravel. The scenery was beautiful and the sound of Parley’s Creek almost drowned out the sound of the highway. The kids enjoyed throwing snowballs at each other and being out in the sunshine on this winter day.

Gorgeously warm January day! If only the trail was as nice. Turning west away from the mountains and crossing through a tunnel with graffiti got this hike off to a strange start. Then there was a red sleeping bag and vomit on the trail. What the cuss?! But after that, this was a really easy and enjoyable hike. It has bark mulch or pavement all along it, so the footing was really nice. I bet this is the least beautiful time of year for this hike, but the kids and I enjoyed it anyway.
