Michele Neel reviewed Humpback Rocks Recreation Area

A 5 star east coast trail but really can't compare to hiking out west. Great combination of natural and placed rocks/wood for some of the stairs. Nice outcropping sat the top with expansive view and a satisfying longer version back heading towards the Appalachian picnic area than turning left. Don't let the only 1 mile up fool you into a quick up and back. You definitely need a bit of cardio health to the top and even the long down path had another gradual climb at the end. It was a nice choice for a group of mid 40's to 50's year old women.

This aside from Calvert cliffs orange trail is the best in this county in my opinion. The ferry crossing trail was challenging and beautiful. Yes there are a few turn offs at the start where a map would be handy. Our lead hiker kept an eye on the map and we were fine. Next time I do this hike I want to have a car at both ends one at the barn down scientist cliffs road and one down double oak in Prince Frederick. There has been some natural planting and landscaping at the start that makes it Disneyesque beautiful and unique to the many hikes in the area but the predominant stunning scenery is all natural.

This was a fun bike ride with the kids. The tunnel was long and dark. Very different than my usual hikes. As far as all hikes I've done I'd give it 2 stars but for Mid East coast it's a 4.

If this is the fire tower trail, agree with prior poster. Trail is basically a gradual incline road to a very nice overlook. Climbing the fire tower was the most adrenaline induced part of the hike. Great pics!

Some of the rock tracking in the water is awkward and there is a lot of it, it is worth it. Crazy crowded at the start as we were in a heatwave and this hike will keep you cool so totally understandable. After the first waist high crossing the crowd lessened by half and we continued to the Canyon split and went right another 15 minutes for a high rock vista lunch just outside the darker slot Canyon area. A nice 4 hourish up and back hike for a 100+ degree day.

Nice find on a hot 108 degree day at a locals suggestion. Easiest route includes a brief swim through a cool mountain pool.

After long switchbacks to a brief flat stretch then short switchbacks the real adventure begins. The .5 mile stretch of Angels landing was an hour of extreme fear at the start overtaken by endorphins from exertion to pure joy at the accomplishment of it all.

We almost stopped at the first waterfall but were rewarded by going an extra 10 minutes with another slot Canyon and smaller waterfall. This stunning hike was done in just under 3 hours for my husband and I (50 & 52). After the pile of rocks on the right about a mile or so in the scenery starts to amp up to the most amazing finale at first or second fall. I would have gone on and on the many more miles if my body and daylight would allow.

I left a review for Valhalla lake but this is what we actually did. It was neat knowing that we were on the PCT after recently reading the book "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed.

This was a very nice hike my husband and I did, not too easy nor difficult with lots of changing scenery. We packed a lunch which we ate at the lake.

I've done this trail so many times and love to introduce friends to the "wild side" of the orange trail which veers to the left at the split but is lightly traveled and not marked so go at own risk and can follow a lightly tread path.

Did this with a group of 7 girls all different abilities. Definitely a nice hike for many levels of experience. Lunch at Black rocks is a must!
