The Wallowas are a beautiful range and well worth checking out. I would give this a four star but my buddy and I had a bit of a misadventure on this one. We started from Hurricane Creek trailhead and ended up overshooting the barely visible trail which would lead across Hurricane Creek losing about 3 hours in the process once we recovered. Traversal of the creek was dicey, we had to use downed logs to get across.

The trail eventually gets steep before opening up in a meadow. Our resources were a bit depleted from the misadventure so we were thankful to see a creek high up where we could refill water.

Then we began the final traverse. The snow season ended early this year, so the final ascent was entirely made of scree. There is a small trail that ends up disappearing in places which adds to the confusion of route finding.

Thankfully, we made the ridge and had to perform a couple class 2 scrambles on the ridge line to reach the summit where a couple cairns are setup.

The views were excellent as we can see well into the Wallowas, making the early pains worth the payoff.

The down climb was a little rougher as we were running on empty and the skree was killer on our feet. But my buddy and I made it to the trailhead bagging one of the great peaks of Oregon!

Access to the trail can be difficult due to blown down trees but any trees preventing access were cleared out. The trail had a few down trees to traverse and melting snow was an obstacle in the upper portions of the hike.

Bugs were a common annoyance. There were a couple ladybug nests on the summit and we spotted a moose on the drive off the trail.

This is the county high point for Ferry Washington and so the views from the top were good all around. I was able to see the Selkirk range to the east.

The Good: The trail was a decent first hike of the season. Great weather provided for a great 360 degree view of tge countryside. Would do it again with a friend.

The Bad: Snow and some exposure

The Ugly: I tried a variant where I attempted to loop in Sturgeon Rock and come back via the Tarbell Trail. At this time, DO NOT do this as the lower Tarbell trail is closed to logging.

Weather ended up holding out pretty good today! Being a local from the Pacific Northwest, this hike reminded me of home. Wet, rooty, and lots of rocks to step around. The first two miles is like this consistently.

After reaching whale laoe, a sign will point to the summit. There is a panoramic point close to the end - great photo ops! Continue past this and hang a right once you come to a field of slab. Once you see the plaque, you've made it! Welcome to the top of Minnesota!

Bugs were fairly non-existent (might be to early). Saw a grouse on the trail. Heard a couple bugles - moose, deer, elk? Still trying to figure it out...

Great views! This state high point makes you work for it with a grueling first mile, two false summits, and a short class 3 scramble before the summit.

I saw falcons, lizards, and a garter snake, along with the standard birds and bugs.

Starting it at dawn gave me a chance to watch the sunrise and enjoy a cooler walk. Bring extra water and sunscreen if you decide to start later.

Note to a future climber: bring a notebook for the summit log. The current logbook at the top is full...

Even with the 11 miles spacing out the 4500 ft gain, this is a beast of a mountain. I got lucky finding parking - this is a wildly popular trail! The parking lot was full by the time I got there at 5:45am in the morning so I suggest you get to the trail head sooner if you plan to do this on the weekend.

The weather was great today! People were generally in a good spirits throughout the climb and someone even proposed to his girlfriend on the summit! Such a cool memory!

This is a high altitude climb - make sure you've acclimated properly and know pressure breathing if you're coming from sea level.
